GENERAL NOTES
Piping and Equlpwent insulation Standards have hewn prepaid ezpreasly for use by employees of Th* Dow Chemical company and Contractor* ngagod by the Company. These Standards have been designed to rill re quirements of the Engineering,Purchasing and Pipe Shop Departments Of the Coapany and slallar requirements of outside Contractors engaged in Coapany work.
1 DESIGN and BILLING NOTES
Designers shall pay particular attention to the various thick* nesses for the different pipe sizes to Insure providing neces sary clearance between parallel piping,or piping close to walls, ceilings or equipment*
Designers shall specify Size and quantity of Insulation requir ed for blocking across flanged pipe fittings and valves,*eld end valves,equipment nozzles and other equipment flanges which are to be insulated. These lteas are often overlooked And are not available unless they are billed, listed and purchased for respective applIcstlons.
Bills of Material shall list the following:
a. Kind,type,size and quantity of Insulation proper* b. Kind,type,sire and quantity of insulation fir blocking
In flanged fittings,valves,nozzles,etc* c. Quantity of weatherproof felt If required* d. Quantity of galvanized sheet metal If required. e. Sundry materials shall be billed As "One ldt of Sun
dries consisting of mini in,paste,staples,asphalt aastle ...etc." Refer to Sundries, IN-209*
2. JOB PREPARATORY WORK
a. All surfaces shall be clean before applying insulation. All loose scale,dtrt,etc.,shall he removed, wire brushlhg where necessary.
b. Vessels for hot Insulation do not require sand blasting and painting unless In badly rusted condition.
e. Vessels for cold Insulation shall be sandblasted and palm ed one prime ccat in the shop and a second coat of the same in the field.
d. All piping and equipment shall be tight before JnsiilitlOn Is applied. Testing for tightness, particularly 1h hew construc tion, should precede application wlnrevcr practical and possible.
e. piping and equipment shall not he covered Ih wet or frost ed condition. This shall be especially adhered to In cold Insulation work.
3* INSULATION JOINTS
All Insulation joints shall lie tnie,eveh and firmly butted together. StyroToam and cork Joints shall be sealed and #aH*.Absolutely tight against entry of moisture.

ECONOMIC THICKNESS AND AMORTIZATION POLICIES
ffof the purpose of calculating the ait* and thickness 6f therwAl Insulations,pipe lines and equipment shall be classified and insult* tion shall be designed In accordance with the policies outlined below. Since it is not possible to list all conditions whieh way be encount ered,this outline will serve as a guide for special cases.
1. Long T*rw Investwent Claae
Insulation for pip# and equipment In this class shall he de signed to produce an 'annual rate or return on the investwent*
of not less than 20 percent. This corresponds to an awortle&tlon period of 6 years on the total Installed eost of the Insulation.
Included In this class are:
a. straw distribution wains. b. Main steaw lines and principle equlpwent lh Power Homes ,
IHiwp Houses, Boiler Roows, etc. c*. Pipe liner and equlpwent in perwanent laboratorIes,5hops,ete. d. Perwanent refrigeration and air conditioning systew.
2. Short Terw Investwent Class.
Insulation In this class shall be designed for an annual rate of return on the Investwent of 35 percent, or an awortlEttlon period of within u years.
a. Included here are branch or connecting lines froa dis tribution wains to operating equlpwent.
b. Include also process piping and process equlpwent in general* However, operating conditions way dictate the
type, Irind and thickness of insulation in order to weet process requlrewents.
3. Mlnlwuw Thickness Class
a. Piping and equlpwent in pilot or sewi-plknts shall Use
wlnlauw thickness of insulation., or be designed for iou percent annual return(one year awortiratlon)which
ever results in the greater thickness.
b. Pipe lines heated by steaw or water tracer lines shall
be covered with 6ee IN-305.

9* SMALL DIAMETER VESSELS
For vessels 3'*0"i in disaster and saaller, use added pipe in sulation (sectional) or curved blocks on the bodies, and flat blocks on the heads. On saall dished heads with disaster IB* or less, alneral wool eeaent way be used as an alternate to blocks.
10. STANDARD PLANT WATER HEATERS
