V* October 21, 1970 ASETSTOS DUST On May 6 end 7, 170, Haskell laboratory sponsored a company-wide seminar to discuss the health effects of inhalation of asbestos and means of measuring and contrelli:.:' the potential hazard. As a result of this meeting, certain agreements were roiLe in regard to asbestos duat criteria, sampling techniques, and recoraaendations on the use of protective equipment. This information vas transmitted to our Textile Fibers j-lar.ts in a letter dated r.ay 22, 1V70, entitled, "Asbestos Dust Control." Along with this letter, ve distributed a manual developed at the Old Hickory plant in November of ISO"> vhi'.'h covered the subject of asbestos dust control in considerable depth. Eecause of the hazards of exposure to certain asbestos dust particles, manage ment is concerned with the proper control of this environmental hazard. We have been questioned iy some of our plants as to when an Engineering Standard will be written coverin-, rc.'aus.sr.oec asbestos cust criteria, controls, and protective measures. I have discussed this question with the chairmen or Standards Engineers of the Air Quality, Process Insolation, and Safety and Fire Protection Subccezaittecs and discover that none of these coral:er asbestos control within the scope of their charter. It would seem that control of asbestos dust should be an item of high priority in the protection of the health and welfare of our employees. We, therefore, recommend that you review the charters of the various Standards Subcommittees and, if you feel as we do, that this subject be r.ade an active item for 1971.
