To reiterate, there are no federal (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) standards regulating in any way the use of A/C water pipe or the asbestos content of potable water. Since the finding of asbestos-like fibers in Lake Superior in 1973, the Agency has researched this matter extensively via epidemiologic and animal studies. None of those studies have concluded that there is a cause and effect relationship between asbestos and drinking water and any disease. Moreover, the World Health Organization does not have, nor has it proposed, a standard or a maximum contaminant level for asbestos in drinking water or standards restricting the use of A/C pipe. Please find enclosed one copy of the following items: 1. An information package on A/C pipe. This includes a chronology of scientific and medical research investigating the safety of A/C pipe, a question and answers reference, an A/C pipe glossary and an Association booklet addressing the asbestos and health issue. 2. Four issues of "A/C Advisory." 3. A Study of the Problem of Asbestos in Drinking Water published by the American Water Works Association. 4. A summary of the findings of recent studies on asbestos in drinking water, including copies of the Smith et al and Hilding et al studies. 5.
