Selected after exhaustive lalioralory teits and actual shop usage, Shcrein* Williams material* are now being used to a considerable extent in all phases of painting the McDonnell "jets.*'
Finishing the modem high-speed air craft presents a challenging problem which only the highest quality of work manship atul materials can hojw* to solve . . . tcm|>ciuturc3 as Jow as minus 70 degrees F. . . cltangts in excess of 100 degrees per uiinuic . . . vibration . . . cx|Kiue to weather., . rapid flight ilextire. . . McDonnell engineers, working handin-hand with S-W transportation repre sentative. 5. W. Powell of St. Louis, finally concluded test* on rinc dmnnstre
primer, airfoil sanding surfaccr, fairing putty and cellulose nitrate lacquer which proved the excellence of S-W products.
Tlie primer was found to have very rapid drying properties which saved ap proximately 85 per cent hi the time required to paint detail pans. The aurfacer possessed superior flexibility and excellent sanding properties, as did the fairing putty. A smooth, glossy finish with a minimum of "orange peel"' was obtained with the lacquer. The finishes were developed by S-W's Chicago and
