Asbestos to Reinforce Plastics
REMARKS

pate writ April IT
The purpose of this Report of Call Is to reoord our discussions with Mr. Jerome regarding the use of Crocidollte and Amoslte asbestos products for reinforcement of plastics. North American Asbestos Corporation is wholly ovmed by Cape Asbestos Company of South Africa (a holding and Investment company)*
Crocidollte asbestos Is recognized to be the strongest of all fibrous materials. Tensile strength of this fiber runs up to 876,000 psi. It Is unfortunate that the length is limited to the width of the vein of naturally occurring asbestos crystals. Mr. Jerome delivered data that indicated that Crocidollte and Amosite^ asbestos materials have much better chemical resistance than Canadian asbestos, * E glass|and C glass. Amercoet lined their Bondstrand pipe with blue Crocidollte
! asbestos impregnated with either epoxy resins or polyester resins. OowSmlth uses Canadian asbestos paper Impregneted with epoxy Novolac foraulatlon.
We discussed the OowSmlth results of using NAAC Crocidollte asbestos mat to tine 0* and 8M Chamline pipe. The tests indicated that wa should procaad with Type I Cl0*612, one ounce per sg. ft. Enough of this material was ordered, to accomplish a limited production run. This product sells for about $1.00 per lb. t Of special Interest fa NAAC's asbestos fibers In loose fora since these sell for between 9$ and 27d per lb. For record, these particular product* were discussed.
Many wl 11 be sampled to OowSml th:
Crocidollte C10-F713f 27d per lb.--best grade
Crocidollte C10-F700# !5d par lb.--Contains a low percentage spherical minerals of the same chemical composition of the fibrous asbestos

: Crocidolite C10-F729. 17< per lb.--smae as C10-F700, only ( mechanically treated to open tho bundles. 1
; Amosite AI0-F701, 9* per lb.--comperes with C10-F700 'I
Aon*Its AIO-F801, s new grade thet will sell for less then
9d per lb. .1
, Amosite AI0*F208, 2$< per 1b.--a cleaned up version of AIO* , F801. has fibers up to 2" long.
Crocidolite C10-F600 Series, I/2C per lb. more than the above ; Series but with appreciably longer fiber length
i The above materials are used to reinforce thermosetting repin molding compounds. Mr. Jerome stated that tho most common way to disperse these materials was In
a high shear miser such as e Hobart mixer. One possible drawback Is that the hardness'of both Crocidolite end Amosite asbestos Is appreciably greater then E glass and Is, thus, more difficult to machine (herder on tho tools).. These fibers have a higher modulus then glass, nearer thet of steel, end, hence. Impact strength would be correspondingly decreased--tommll* strength increased.
OowSmith--Little Rock is very interested in evaluating these as tho reinforcement for molddd epoxy fittings.
