MSD crews found the device while inspecting the pipe for a blockage which prevented the discharge of a waste stream from our plant. No one knows how long the device may have been in place. The St. Louis Fire Department and Bomb Squad responded and served as spokespersons. An MSD spokesperson was also on hand. Loren Wassell, Public Affairs, The Chemical Group, deflected calls to the designated agencies although he did provide some .background information. Attempts to detonate the device, two plastic containers wired to an electrical board, failed. The bomb squad removed the device without incident and will study it further. Although two small nearby businesses were evacuated earlier in the day, the Monsanto plant continued to operate although one process was shut down as a precaution. The all clear was given at 1:00 p.m. Channels 2, 4, 11, and KMOX covered the events. The only Monsanto mentions, as of early this afternoon, described the device's proximity to our facility.
