Bauer October 28, 1968 , , Af, CT SUBJECT: Vinyl Resins and Plasticizer Summary - Tarrytown Technical Center October, 1968 CALENDERING, FLOORING AND RECORDS VINYL SUSPENSION RESINS FOR CALENDERING (333 S 90) /)hyr/3fcz#XJ 1. ELM COATED FABRICS, BROOKLYN, NEW YORK M ^` __ / iPaJ&snjiAi.--/ QUz-WU C`#J- The Special Problems GroupAt'Texas City is preparing "series of 7 ' experimental resin samples for submittalto Elm. Meanwhile, our salesman, \ Kw ,r-/'ft*'?-'^Tj^Iorn^^has defined that^'LASKON" SG-313^presents eighty percent of the PVC resin consumed by Elm (about WJd pounds). Therefore, the target resin is of a different molecular weight from that defined six months ago (I.V. 0.82 vs 0.97). In spite of this, it is expected that the proposed series of experimental resins will provide a useful definition of Elm's needs with respect to fines level and dry blending characteristics. If Elm's requirements define the need for a direct com petitor to "PLASKON" SG-313, it will be necessary for UCC to consider production of a new product - QSAJ. (L. G. Bauer DATE: January 31, 1968 SUBJECT: Vinyl Resin and Plasticizer Summary - Tarrytown Technical Center, January, 1968 CALENDERING, FLOORING & RECORDS VINYL SUSPENSION RESINS FOR CALENDERING (333 S 90) 1. VINYL CHLORIDE-ETHYLENE COPOLYMERS - APPLICATIONS STUDY The revised applications program relating to these copolymers will not be issued for another two weeks. Meanwhile, two phases of the program are underway. The use of type - III resins in calendered film and sheeting is reported under Vernon Plastics; the use of type - I in wire and cable is summarized underV QSAN-7 in that section of this report, * (W. H. Bauer) 2. PLATE-OUT STUDIBS Rerun of the five resins outlined in the December Summary failed to confirm the advantage of type - I resins over conventional Process 7 homopolymer. Reproducibility of the Ford plate-out test is a plague upon this program. A sample of Borden's VC 106 PM (suspected to be acid polymerized) was somewhat lighter than QYTQ-7 (Blend 211)." During February, a meeting will be held with Messrs. Richard son and Meissner to determine the future course of this study. (W. H. Bauer) ucc 087138 3. ELM COATED FABRICS, BROOKLYN, NEW YORK The customer has all but abandoned the use of Process 5 resins and all efforts to secure approval of Process 7 counterparts have met with failure. Mr. L. G. Krauskopf has been assigned the task of defining the technical problems at this account. Once defined, appropriate action and/or programs will be recommend ed. (W. H. Bauer) 4. VERNON PLASTICS, LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS Samples of Opalons 660 and 630 (Monsanto) have been character ized for melt and compound physical properties in four of the'subject's formulations. Ethylene modified vinyl resins QSOS and QSOM have been assessed as part for part replacements in the Vernon systems and are adjudged as suitable for trials in the subject's calendering operation to achieve: 1. Improved physicals at equivalent processing characteristics. Insufficient data is available at this time to make a recommenda tion on formulation adjustments to achieve: 2- Equivalent physicals at improved processibility.
