This year's meeting will take place at the Woodlands Conference Center, Houston, Texas, during 31 July - 2 August 2006, as I advised in my email to all of you on 27 April. Bruce Jarnot will follow up with details about the meeting venue, how to get there, etc. This year's meeting is fundamentally different from the last 3 Annual Research Meetings, in that the representatives of the sponsoring companies will attend only as observers. I have been invited to organize the meeting, on behalf of the investigators and the panel members (See draft preliminary agenda, attached). I see this meeting as our last opportunity to discuss major issues with the investigators before case accrual ends. Accordingly, I invite each of you to suggest specific topics that should be included on the program. A similar invitation will be extended to the investigators. I will distribute a more detailed agenda during July, after I have received your suggestions. Clearly, we need to hear about the preliminary data set for the case-control study that Rich Irons is to provide to Otto Wong (which hopefully he will have supplied by the time of the Houston meeting); the current status of the exposure assessment effort; the status of studies directed towards elucidating the mechanism(s) of carcinogenic action of benzene; and the prospects for continuation of the JCML and maintenance of the SHELL-MCCLURG-058251 database and repository after SHS funding ceases. I await your suggestions for additional specific topics. We also will need to work out a time line for specific actions which involve the Panels and will be required to complete the various studies. This will include any of the small working group meetings that were suggested at last November's meeting, such as one for exposure assessment, perhaps another for epidemiology, and any others that are identified as necessary. I understand from Rich Irons that the mid-year progress reports for the Molecular Epidemiology and Disease Progression studies will not be available by the end of June. He hopes to have these ready to distribute to the panels by mid-July. Accordingly, since we really need to have a conference call to discuss the progress reports and to prepare for the Houston meeting, this call will most likely be scheduled during the week of July 24-28.
