Staffay June 25, 1979 INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE ACTIVITIES - JUNE 1979 A request has been made to Mr. Earl Martin, Surface Transportation, Houston, for listings of toxic and hazardous materials which may be present In the working areas of Surface and Transportation Operations. This is essential so that a program can be established which will allow the Medical Division to fulfill its responsibilities of identi fying and monitoring conditions involving toxic materials and harmful physical agents through statistical, inspection, and medical examin ation procedures. This is also essential since it will help the Medical Division in aiding in the evaluating medical requirements for personnel employed in various areas of Surface and Transportation Operations. Aid has been given to Mr. Dean Armstrong, Transportation, in the area of lead surveillance at the Ponca City rail transportation repair shops. This included background of the present Lead Standard, monitoring, and medical surveillance. A review has been made of certain areas specific to Safety, Work Practices, Industrial Hygiene, Medical Surveillance, and Sanitation found in the General Process Requirements of the NXOSH Criteria for a Recommended Standard for Occupational Exposures in Cosl Gasification Plants. This review, made at Dr. Massed's request. Is not all inclusive of the many areas which are more detailed in the NIOSH Criteria Document on Coal Gasification Plants. Recomnendetlone have been made to Mr. Jess Sodowsky, Ponca City Refinery, regarding protection of employees who may be potentially exposed to FCC catalyst dust. This covers persons who may be working la the units on Jobs which arc incidental to the normal operation of or which are associated with maintenance of the units. A masting of the Carbon Black Industrial Hygiene Subcommittee was attended on June 13, 1979, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The purpose of the meeting was to formulate e presentation for requesting a change in the TLV of carbon black from 3.5 mg/3 to 10 mg/a3, that of nuisance dust. Recommendations have been made to Mr. Jess Sodowsky, Ponca City Refinery, regarding the use of Alrstreaa antidust helmets. These would be used during special conditions, which might indicate that conventional dust respirators, for any reason, are lass practical for protection against dust exposure. l0000065l HCt> 0 Robert L. Reports will be written for these areas of operation listing the discrepancies found and the recommendations which are felt necessary for proper corrections to be made. An order for 25 copies of the Safety Guide for Chemical and Hazardous Materials has been filled for Mr. G. 7. Santos, New Orleans, Louisiana. These are to be used, in modified form, for various offshore drilling operations locations* A copy of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission rules aimed at minimizing the possible overexposure of transient workers or workers who moonlight at more than on licensed operation has been sent to the attention of Mr. B. J. Williams, Research and Development Radiotracer Research, Ponca City. A number of problems and requests for aid which concerns the medical/ Industrial hygiene efforts have been referred to the attention of Dr. DeWhitt. His report will detail these areas of Interest.
