Calvert City plant spills cause few problem
CALVERT CITY, Sy. -- No injuries or major damage was reported in two unrelated chemical spills which occurred at the BF Goodrich Co. plant here Thunday and Friday.
Friday's stall, which involved vinyl chloride, required the evacuation of about 30 employees in the administration building, said plant manager Wayne Morris- The spill occurred at U ajn,
Morris said the evacuation was a safety utica because the wind was blowing vapors
. chloride, a carcinogen, toward the building. He said the normal acceptable level of the chemical is one part per ndflioo, and levels in excess oflO ports pet mlBica ware detected.
"It was not serious from an explosion or fire standpoint, but it was because * the concern that people would be exposed," Morris said- The workers were moved to another part of the plant and no Injuries were reported-
Morris said the Chemical spilled from a recovery system which sends unacceptable cloride back Into the processing system. A in a recovery line broke. Officials said they did
not know how much of the chemical spilled. Production in the rest of the plant was not

OaThursdey. an undetermined quantity of ethylene dl-ddoride leaked from an underground sewer line and Into an abandoned storm sewer which leads directly to the Tennessee River.
Officials of Paducah Water Works, which takes water from the Ohio River about 1$ miles below the plaid, said they had been notified of the spill, but had not been told of any dangerous levels of the chemical In the rivers.
Morris said the chemical leaked into the storm sewer when a 24-inch line leading from the plant to a collection system apparently broke. He said the tine Is IS feet below foe-surface of
the action was taken to block

80 yards of concrete from Federal Material
Paducah to block the line. The spill was reported to investigators for
