Mittnacht Ethyl Gasoline Corporation Chrysler Building New York City New York Dear Mr. Mittnachts Enclosed Is your letter from Mr. Blakeslee of the American Petroleum Institute together with the literature on the Willson Respirators* The two types of respirators indicated on the folder are not satisfactory for use in work with lead tetraethyl. V/e have corresponded with the Willson Company and have been advised by them that they have no canister which they feel will give protection from lead tetraethyl, and our inspection of these respirators leads us to the same conclusion. The Willson Company recommends their air line respirator for use in high concentrations of organic vapor. These respirators are entirely satisfactory when used frequently as they would be around a chemical plant, but in situations such as are encountered In Ethyl blend ing, that is, Infrequent use and wide fluctuations of temperature, air line respirators are more frequently out of order than in as a result of condensation of moisture and related conditions. In connection with respirators, we have been corresponding with the E. D. Bullard Company and have had one of their gas masks In use here at the laboratory for the past year. Mr. E. W. Bullard has asked us to approve their gas mask for use in lead tetraethyl blend ing.
