SC-ELEC-00037 General Cable for the most comprehensive line of wire, cable and associated products available anywhere More than a full-fine supplier of quality wire and cable products--General Cable is a re liable supply source you can depend on for fast, efficient response to all your needs. It offers the electric utility industry years of accumulated experience in quality control, manufacturing, engineering, research and development. Founded in 1882, the same year the first Edison generating station began operations in New York, General Cable is, today, one of the nation's leading independent producers of both power and communications wire and cable. It maintains a nationwide network of manufacturing plants, sales offices, distri bution centers and regional warehouses-- all dedicated to prompt, dependable re sponse to customer needs. Sensitive to the stringent quality demands of the electric utility industry, General Cable Genera/ Cable provides a complete line of aluminum and ACSR con ductors lor aerial power transmission and distribution. RBB 01383 maintains a rigorous quality assurance pro gram to insure product integrity. !t is, through its modern research and develop ment facilities and skilled application engi neers, equipped to satisfy requirements for the most advanced cable designs. This brochure is not intended as a de tailed catalog of our product line. It is in tended, rather, as a brief introduction to the scope and range of the products we pro duce for electric utilities. For complete data, please consult the appropriate General Cable catalog (see back cover) or cali yournearest General Cable sales office. Q RBB 01384 POWER CABLES Regardless of your requirements, General Cable can furnish power cable to fit the task from low voltage power and lighting circuits to 345kv high pressure, oil filled pipe type cable for the transmission of huge blocks of power. A broad range of insulations are avail able. Among them are impregnated paper, HMW (high molecular weight polyethylene), Genkene* (cross-linked polyethyiene), EPR (ethylene propylene rubber), hypalon and varnished cambric. Paper Insulated Paper insulated lead covered cable, low pressure oil filled cable and pipe type cable have for years served as system backbone cable in electric utility underground plant. They have performed this function with an excellence not approached by any other cable system. Primary reasons for its suc- (Aj Pipe type cable: available through 345kv in aluminum or copper conductors. Added to these benefits is the mechanical protection and impervious ness which lead sheaths or steel pipes lend to the underlying cable structures. Other important characteristics of these systems are the exceptionally high fault current cap ability of the lead sheaths or steel pipes and corrosion protection in the form of syn thetic jackets or coatings. Solid Dielectrics Cables utilizing an insulation extruded onto the conductor in a solid wall are commonly referred to as solid dielectric cable types. Of these, General Cable offers Genkene (cross-linked polyethylene), HMW (high molecular weight polyethylene), EPR (ethyl ene propylene rubber), and hypalon. These cable types are recommended for use in the voltage ranges shown below for a variety of applications, among them Un derground Residential Distribution, under ground backbone feeder cable, and station power cable. Cables for use at 5kv and above are gen erally shielded. Depending upon the in tended application, the outside covering, i.e., metallic shield and overall jacket or concentrically applied neutral, will vary. The underlying core will, however, in these voltage ratings, generally consist of an aluminum or copper conductor, extruded semi-conducting conductor shield, extruded insulation, and an extruded semi-conduct ing insulation shield. Metallic shields are available to provide all the benefits of an electrostatic shield and to lend the proper fault current capability to the cable construction in its intended use. The metallic shield may consist of concen trically applied round copper wires, flat copper ribbons, helically applied copper tape(s), or a longitudinally applied and cor rugated copper or corrosion protected aluminum tape. Overall protective jackets, depending upon application, are available in asbestos braid, PVC (polyvinyl chloride), hypalon, HMW, high density polyethylene, or neo prene.
