After several years of sporadic effort it appears that the paint-repair safety hazard controversy can be settled.
Mr. Henry Taylor and Rick Schmidt conducted a series of tests at the T. C. R. shed concerning the possibility of a flammable atmosphere during painting.
From the results Mr. Taylor was able to recommend steps which when followed should assure safe operation of the facility. A very brief statement of these recommendations and their implementation follows:
1. In any one hour period use no more than four gallons of primer gray enamel, black epoxy; or three gallons of black enamel or two gallons of MEK.
This presents no problem since these quantities are greater than normal usage.
2. There should be no open flame, space heaters, hot surfaces or spark producing equipment within 20 feet of the point of spray.
To accomplish this two types of equipment, the pipe threading machine and the kerosene space heaters will be labeled with instructions not to be used when spraying is being done within 20 feet of their location.
3. All electrical wiring should be installed as if a Class 1 hazard area did in fact exist.
All of the permanent wiring receptacles, lights, lighting panel, now comply with Class 1, Dw. II requirements. Three types of portable equipment normally used in the shop do not meet those requirements. They are a welding machine, a pipe threading machine

and the kerosene space heaters. Provisions as described in 2 above are being made to assure that this equipment is not used within twenty feet of a point of spray. The welding machine is outside of the twenty foot limitation.
These actions plus the continuation of present rules concerning paint and solvents storage should assure no safety hazard as a result of repair and painting activities in the same area. Implementation should be completed by May 15.
