Thank you also for sending your W HO Declaration of Interests. In assembling a Working Group, we have to consider knowledge and experience, declarations of interests, plus represent all aspects of the science involved and achieve a fair balance of nationalities. W e generally seek to include experts who have published research on the (carcinogenicity of) the spi&ific agents being reviewed. Among the first group of 22 experts to whom w e have sent a preliminary invitation, we were ab le to include six who responded to our 'Call'. W e also included three experts who w ere nominated by national health agencies. On the basis of the availability of the scientists in this first group, we may foliow-up with a second series of invitations. The complete roster of meeting participants will be posted on our web site in November. W e noticed that a majority of nominations came from the US, a country that is already represented in large numbers on most Monograph Working Groups. 1ARC has always strived for a broad international representation, and it would have been difficult to select more of the nominees without losing that balance. W e trust that you will understand the importance of including scientists with relevant publications from many different countries. W e also note that, on the basis of the Declarations of interests, many of the nominees were consultants or had current or recent associations with the companies involved in the production of one of the agents under review. These nominees would not have been allowed to share the responsibility of drafting a sub-section of a Monograph, and that would have rcreased the workload of the rest of the Working Group. Finally, you may wish to note that Monograph meetings can accommodate a limited number of Observers, who may be nominated via our web site until November 1.
