Replies regarding participation in the Association were read by Peter McCarthy. a) Pfizer, although not in attendance, voiced support. b) U/iited Sierra declined to participate. . c) Vermont Talc Indicated no interest at thia time. d) Windsor Minerals (Johnson & Johnson) declined membership. e) Southern Talc would participate through Whittaker, Clark & Daniels. f) American Talc voiced agreement. , Discussion was as follows: a) It was agreed that the Association would function on an informal basis. b) The Association's approach to the problem would be divided into two main areas: ' 1) Medical - since no expertise exist in this area among Association producers, it was agreed to seek the service of a recognized con sultant. Mr. R. Bacon recommended Dr. 6. W. Schepers, formerly of the Haskell Lab for Toxicology & Industrial Medicine of E. I. DuPont de Nemours & Co. Dr. Schepers was contacted and agreed to meet with the Association on June 15 (together with a member of Dr. Kleinfeld's staff) to review the current status of talc and conduct a search of the literature (aided by participating members). This initial phase is to cover approx. 10 hours at an estimated cost of lj2500/hour. 2) Mineralogically - it was suggested that participating companies who operate in an accumulative effort, test representative ore and end produce samples. Analytical procedures are to include x-ray and microscopic examination; the cost of this work to be equally divided among the Association members. c) The resulting medical and mineralogical data would then be considered for publication in industrial journals and presented to OSHA. d) Funding - it was recommended that an initial assessment be set at $500.00 per company to cover legal fees and the proposed work by Dr. Schepers. Additional monies would be assessed as required. e) Meetings - it was suggested that meeting be scheduled once each month unless more frequently required.
