Q - Does MUA/Santoquln contain any PCB?
A - PCB is not used in the MHA/ ' Santoquln process. They are produced at different loca tions. We constantly oheok MHA/Santoquln as part of our quality control program. With respect to MHA/Santoquln, PCB is like any other impurity -- either not present at all, or present only in inconsequential, trace quantities.
Q - We have analyzed MHA/Santoquin and have found small quantities
of PCB. Does this coincide with your findings?
A - We have from time to time found minute quantities of PCB. These
are measured in parte per blllloa however, and are of very little concern, particularly since MHA/ Santoquln are used in feeds at very low levels.
Q - Is MHA/Santoquin produced at the A - No, not even in the same state. eame location as PCB?
Q - Is there any possibility of PCB A - It would be practloally im
being mistakenly shipped in plaoe
possible.
of MHA/Santoquin?
Q - Are MHA/Santoquln containers similar to PCB containers?
A - MHA is shipped in bags; Santoqula
and PCB in drums. The drums may be similar but labels are plainly marked. Since the products are produced at different locations, chances of getting labels mixed up is vary remote.
<j - Does Monsanto monitor MHA/ Santoquln for PCB oontent?
A - Yes, we have a routine monitoring program.
Q - Is PCB used in the MHA/Santoquln A - No. process?
V - Is PCB used anywhere at the Nltro A - No. Plant?
Q - Santoquln Emulsion and Mixture 6 are formulated at Travelers Reet, S.C. Is PCB used at Travelers Rest or anywhere in the vermicullte (carrier for Santoquln-6) process?
A - Not that we are aware of. MONS 095169
q - What levels of MHA/Santoquln are added to fishmeal?
Q - To feed?
q - Is there a limitation on the amount of Santoquln that oan be added to fishmeal?
Q - Are there any labeling require ments if Santoquln is added to fishmeal?
q - Do you know whether or not foreign produoed ethoxyquln oontalns any PCB?
q - Are MHA/Santoquln used for food - purposes? q - Are warning statements required
for Santoquln?
q - What is the FDA status in regard to Santoquln?
A - MHA is not added to fishmeal.. Santoquln is normally added at 1-li lb./ton.
A - The addition of MHA varies according to Its economics In a particular situation, but normally from i to A lb./ton. Santoquln is added at a rate of $ lb./ton with a maximum limit on Santoquln in finished feed of 3/10 lb./ton
A - Santoquln may be added to fish meal at any level necessary to achieve the desired effeot (reduction of oxidative heating and protection of nutrients from oxidative destruction), but the recommended level Is 1-1i lb./ton.
A - Any fishmeal produced In the U.S. or Intended for use In the U.S. must be properly labeled on all tags or lnvoloes to Insure that the final finished feed in whloh the fishmeal is incorporated does not contain more than 0.3 lb. of Santoquln (150 PPM) as supplied by fishmeal and all other sources.
A - No, we don't know.
A - No.
A - No; however, feed tags must indicate in the Ingredients section; "Ethoxyquln, a preservative".
A - It is a non-drug feed additive under food additive order 121.202

Q - What la the FDA statue in regard to MHA?
Q - la there a limitation on the use of MHA In feeds?
A - Its status ia GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) under the food additive amendment. It is classified as a nutrient and/or dietary supplement.
A - No; however, its use must conform to good feed manu facturing practices.
