I do have several comments on the accuracy of the article and a few "nit picking" corrections. Page 1, Paragraph 1 - Kimberley is the correct spelling - not Kimberly (this error was made In several places). Also in line 6, the correct name of the organization is Lead Industries^ Association, Inn. It should be pointed out that LIA supportedtthereecent federal legislation on lead based paints. Page 1, Paragraph 2 - The recent child's death caused by improperly glazed ceramicware, referred to by Mr. Kimberley, did not result in the establishment of the U.S. Potters Association "Gl&ze Surveillance Program". The program has been in existence for over a year and the preparatory work leading up to the establishment of the program took several years before that. Page 2, Paragraph 1 - With regard to catalytic devices, it should be made clear that Mr. Kimberley's point was that the catalytic approach is not proving successful whether or not leaded fuels are used in conjunction with them. The thermal reactors developed by Ethyl Corporation and Du Pont, however, have been successful In controlling auto exhaust emissions. Further, it is true that the thermal reactor systems are compatible with leaded fuels whiii catalytic systems are not at this time. In the last sentence. It is quite important to point out that whether or not leaded gasolines are used, it will be necessary for some particulate trapping device to be installed on automobiles in order to meet proposed emission goals. Such devices would, of course, remove lead as well as other particulates and so this is no Justification for the removal of lead from gasoline. LIA-77076 Hr. Page 5, Paragraph 2 - Mr. Heaaelberg does not hold a doctorate degree (this error ia also made elsewhere). Page C - The overlong and ponderous sentence beginning, "Industry did not accept..." does not accurately reflect the position of the lead industry. Pather, it is the industry's position that eliminating lead from automobile exhaust would not produce a significant reduction in absorbed lead, as reflected by blood-lead concentrations, either in children or adults. Page 7. Paragraph 1 - While the lack of correlation between urban airborne lead and blood-lead concentrations in the general population is fact, this point was raised by Mr. Hesselberg, not me. Since I do feel that the inaccuracies pointed out above are serious enough to warrant a re-write of the story prior to publication, in the interest of time I am sending a copy of my comments to Dr. Bliss. As I promisdd, I am enclosing a copy of my comments on the second draft of the E.P.A. Air Quality Criteria document for lead. It was a pleasure meeting you in Chicago.
