- 14 - CONFIDENTIAL \ Corporate Quality Control Monthly Report - October 1973 1. Cleveland Plane - continued: one-piece for Republic Canton; the 0685 four-piece for Copperveld, and the 0593 eight-piece for Armco Ashland. More attention to good yield and less to gross productivity would be bore profitable. Some progress was made during the month on improving the asbestos-free recipe for PROFAX boards, although the dustiness is still a problem. Little progress was made in PROFLEX-type recipes. Our attention was mainly occupied in conserving RM 177A which was in short supply. Problems at ^Bethlehem-Johnstown, while believed to be mainly the relaxed customer practices, were Investigated on site and remedial actions taken. 2. CHICAGO PLAMT: In spite of a week's respite by reverting to PROFAX 31, the shortage of RM 177A, and the consequent necessity to use starch binder, continued to give problems in PROFAX products. Tool changes have been required to com pensate for greater shrinkage of starch recipes. Oven calibration problems caused considerable burnt, scrap product with some undercuring during attempts to correct the burning. The one-piece area scrap increased to 3.6X and the PROFLEX rings to 10.2Z. The Super-G machine boards scrap decreased to 7.9X but all areas had scrap well above the acceptable standard. All batches of RM 531A and associated FERRUX were reported satisfactory, and in the Moldcote area only one batch of 109 produced needed reworking. This is continued good product control in this area of operations. 3. CUCAMONGA PLAMT: In this area, 58 batches of FERRUX, STRIM and DESULFEX were tested and shipped with no rework and no rejections. 4. MT. BRADDOCX PLAMT; In Exotharaics', temperature changes interfered with good gassing practice and some losses occurred. Increasing volume of production is causing logistics problems with product movement and storage and breakage is resulting. Attempts to improve the quality of KALKOR plugs have been hampered by the lack of sales feedback on the test plugs. In KALMINEX, rough screens on tooling and poor stripping from the tool are the causes of most defective product. 1743
