West Building, 9th Floor Washington, DC 20590 Dear Secretary Duffy: I write in strong support of the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority's (MTA) application to the Federal Transit Administration's (FTA) Buses & Bus Facilities Program for its Roof Replacement at Bathgate Bus Shop Facility located in the Bronx in New York City. By replacing this facility's roof, MTA will support critical transit services, maintain manufacturing jobs, and reducing long-term maintenance costs. The Bathgate Bus Shop Facility currently houses New York City Transit's (NYCT) Bus Facilities group and is the planned destination for relocating the 9th Avenue Small Unit Shop. The 9th Avenue Small Unit Shop is a vital facility for MTA's bus operations, manufacturing and refurbishing over 3,500 service-critical bus components per year, used throughout NYCT's 4,500 vehicle bus fleet for annual maintenance needs and bus overhauls. The current location of the 9th Avenue Small Unit Shop is no longer viable for existing operations due to recent redevelopment of the area. Modernizing the Bathgate Facility will not only protect the MTA's ability to service and maintain its bus fleet, but will also enable the relocation of the 9th Avenue Small Unit Shop. This relocation would enable the MTA to expand its in-house manufacturing and refurbishment operations, supporting skilled jobs and reducing long-term maintenance costs. These service-critical components cannot be easily or affordably procured, making in-house operations especially important. This project will fully replace the building's existing roof, which at 40 years old is well beyond its useful life. Full replacement is necessary to safeguard the reliability of essential transit support services. For the Bronx and surrounding communities, the investment will ensure continued, dependable service for riders who rely on public transit every day.
