Forthcoming Meetings. * ** * * * **************** ****** ****** * 1. OUTSTANDING SPEAKERS TO ADDRESS SEMI-ANNUAL MEETING. Two of the most colorful figures in American life today will be key speakers at MCA's 16th Semi-Annual Meeting and Midyear Conference in New York on Tuesday, November 22. The luncheon gathering, with some 1100 industry representatives in attendance, will be addressed by The Honorable John V. Lindsay, Mayor of New York City; at the banquet the speaker will be General Maxwell D. Taylor (U.S.A. Ret.), Special Consultant to the President. Information about the entire program, including the subjects of the six panels and the participants, is contained in a flyer being mailed today to all recipients of the General Bulletin. A covering letter and reservation form are enclosed with the flyer. Because of the anticipated demand for reservations, prompt return of the form is suggested. It is appropriate that Mayor Lindsay address the Conference, since 60 per cent of the country's chemical companies have their headquarters in New York. Only 44 years of age, Mr. Lindsay has held the post, considered by some authori ties to be the second heaviest in responsibility next to the Presidency, for an eventful few months, marked by strikes, school crises, disputes over integration, financial difficulties and other problems. A graduate of Yale University, he was admitted to the New York and Federal Bars in 1950, and became a member of a lead ing legal firm and later executive Assistant to the U. S. Attorney General. Enter ing politics, he was elected to the 86th - 87th Congress, and then decided to be a candidate for Mayor. His campaign excited the interest of millions of Ameri cans . AP00023655 3 4. SHORT COURSE ON EXPLOSION PROBLEMS SCHEDULED. A one-week course on "Explosion Problems in the Chemical Industry" will be held in Pittsburgh, Pa. during the week of December 12. The course, sim ilar to those held in 1964 and 1965, is organized as an activity of the Safety and Fire Protection Committee. Drs. R. W. Van Dolah and M. G. Zabetakis of the U.S. Bureau of Mines will again be organizers and lecturers. Registration will be limited to 25 persons, with a tuition charge of $100 per person. Registrants should preferably be employees of member companies, should normally be engaged in an occupation related to process f^.re and explo sion protection, and should have some background in thermochemistry. Persons desiring to attend this course should advise the Association prompt ly. Registrations will be on a first come--first served basis and should be addressed to F. G. Stephenson at MCA. 5. BI-ANNUAL WAGE REPORT PUBLISHED. The Association's 39th consecutive wage report covering the first six months of 1966 has just been issued. One hundred thirty-three pages in length, the document includes compilations of wage statistics on more than 358,000 hourly-paid production and maintenance workers, based on reports from 155 MCA member firms. Twenty-two job classifications are covered in the survey. Com parisons are given between average wage rates in the first six months of this year and in the same period in 1965. A limited number of additional copies of Report No. 39 are available on request from MCA. 6. WATER POLLUTION SEMINARS SCHEDULED. Information has been mailed to MCA Executive Contacts regarding the next two technical seminars on "Water Pollution Control for Chemical Wastes", as fol lows : October 24-28 - University of Washington, Seattle, Washington; co sponsored by the Chemical Industry Council of the Pacific Northwest. November 14-18 - University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana; co sponsored by the Chemical Industry Council of Mich igan, Chemical Industries Council of the Midwest, and Chemical Industry Council of Ohio. As mentioned in an earlier issue of the General Bulletin, registration at each seminar is limited to about 25, in order to achieve effective presentation of the technical information. Applications will be considered in the order in which they are received. Additional copies of the descriptive folders with ap plication forms incorporated are available on request. Seminars next year covering the same technical information are scheduled for February 13-17 at Clemson University; March 27-31 at Manhattan College, and May 22-26 at the University of Waterloo (Ontario, Canada).
