r fiiclosed you will find three eoplee of a report on the results of s-n-tmnl experiments with Kaylo dust* As Is our custom, ve hare
sujsaarised briefly material previously preseated. Including our In
terim report dated October 30, 1947* end have given detailed dis
E cussion only of subsequent developments* When all experiments have been eempleted, ve expect to prepare a final report vhlch will in clude details of each phase so that all data will be available in >
[ one place* However, the expertmental study of the effects of inhaled Kaylo dust on normal uninfected animals is now finished end conclusions expressed on that subject ere final rather than tentative*
In the report issued one year ego, which describes the findings in animals that inhaled Kaylo dust for periods up to 30 months, 'the following tentative conclusion was madet
*In consequence of the experimental studies with guinea pigs to determine the biological activity of
Ksylo, it may be tentatively concluded that Kaylo alone falls to produce significant pulmonary damage when In haled into the lung.*
During the 30 to 3^ months period, however, definite indlc'.tion of tissue reaction appeared in tha ltmga of uIraIs inhaUng Kaylo dust and there fore, Z regret to Bay, our tentative conclusion quoted above must be al tered* Zn all animals sacrificed after more than 30 months of expooure to
Kaylo dust unmistakable evidence of asbestoels has developed, showing that Kaylo on inhalation is capable of producing asbestoels and must be regarded
as a potentlally-haxardous material* It should be noted that since neither
silicosis nor the diffuse pulmonary fibrosis caused by inhaled diatcaaeeous earth was observed, the quarts and diatomcecus earth components of the dust
apparently do not produce their typical lesions*
In order to present more information on the subject asbestoels, certain evidence.derived from our experimental work with asbestos dust has been dis cussed* As these findings hare not yet been released for publication, I re quest that, while using them as required in formulating a safety program,
L you regard them as confidential* 1 355

r The aev series of experiments vith respect to the influence of Xaylo on tuberculous infection ere veil under vsy end ere pro
c gressing satisfactorily. It is, of course, too early to expect significant results on vhich to base area tent*tire conclusions.
c It this tine nay I reriev briefly the financial arrangaent for conducting the investigation vith Ksylo? The research program up to taia year ves carried cm under a contract. Initiated in 1945,
[ by vhich the experiments vould be subsidised vith s grant of 5,000. / per year. As pointed out in my letter of March 3* 1948, the contract terminated officially on February 15, 1948, but the investigation vould
be continued without charge until June because the original experiments
e; vere started late. Since check ves received vhich took care of the subsidy up to Voveaber 15, 1947, there is due on the old contract the sum., of $1,250. for the final quarter of the contract (from Sovember 15,
1947 to February 15, 1948). Ye have delayed sending as invoice for
l the final quarter until all vork could be finished and a final report submitted. Following the termination of the **--"* in. June, it has

X realise that our findings regarding Keylo are less favorable than anticipated* However, since Xaylo is capable of producing asbestosis, it is better to discover it now in anlasls rather than later in industrial workers* Urns the ecapany, being forewarned, will be in a better position to institute adequate control aeasures for safe guarding exposed employees and protecting its ovn interests*
Sincerely yours.
