iiitBmiitBlit ill'' Rurgent. ead n e w s V a September 4, 1979 Dear Customer: Scott Aviation has recently undertaken a program to modify Scott Air-Paks* II, Ha, Presur-Pak'II, Ha, Sling-Paks*and Hoseline/Air-Paks in both Demand and Pressure-Demand type apparatus. The purpose of the program is to modify and up grade all of these products in use, in order to conform to new NIOSH requirements and to correct any problems relating to any possible damage to the diaphragms utilized in these products. NOTE - Failure to modify and upgrade your equipment may cause OSHA citations or reduce respiratory protec tion if damage to diaphragms occurs. We urge all customers to respond promptly to this notice. It is Scott's position that damage to diaphragms can only occur through misuse or abuse, however, we wish to do everything possible to improve these products for the benefit of our customers. All customers should complete the enclosed Modification Information Card as soon as possible and return it to your Scott Distributor or to Scott Aviation. Because of the scope of this replacement program, extraor dinary measures will be necessary to bring about an orderly exchange program. While it is expected that replacement parts will be available within a reasonable time after you contact Scott or your distributor, some additional delay may occur due to inventory shortages. Complete installation instructions will be furnished, and Scott distributors will supply training in retrofit pro cedures, if required. Third-party installation of the partsinvolved can be provided if experienced personnel are not,/ available. Your Scott Authorized Distributor can assist you in arranging for this service. The apparatus xovides using personnel with maximum respiratory protection while performing work in objectionable and unbreathabie toxic atmospheres regardless of concentration or oxygen deficiency. The xeathing regulator is equipped with a pak alarm which will warn the user of diminishing air supply by ringing and vibrating, thus allowing sufficient time for egress from the hazardous area. The apparatus is National institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) approved for use in temperatures ranging to 25 below zero with die addition of a nose cup assembly in the face mask. WARNING CERTAIN GASES SUCH AS HYDROGEN CYANIDE, WHICH POISONS THROUGH THE SKIN: OR AMMONIA, WHICH IR RITATES THE SKIN: REQUIRE PROTECTIVE CLOTHING, IN ADDITION TO THE APPARATUS, TO PROVIDE COMPLETE PROTECTION. SERVICE LIFE This apparatus is approved by the NIOSH/USBM as a "1/2-hour duration" unit, based on the fact that the apparatus, when tested on men performing moderate-to-heavy work was found tojast 30 minutes or more in each of the different types of work tests. The user should not expect to obtain exactly 30 minutes service life from this apparatus on each use. The work being performed may be more or less strenuous than that used in the NIOSH/ USBM tests. Where work is more strenuous, the duration may be shorter, possibly as short as 15 minutes. The duration of the apparatus will depend on such factors as: 1. the degree of physical activity of the user; 2. the physical condition of the user; 3. the degree of which the user's breathing is affected by ex citement, fear or other emotional factors; 4. the degree of training or experience which the user has had with this or similar equipment; 5. whether or not the cylinder is fuHy charged at the start of the work period; 6. the possible presence, in the compressed air, of carbon di oxide concentrations greater than .04% normally found in atmospheric air; 7. the atmospheric pressure; if used in a pressurized tunnel-or caisson at two atmospheres (15 psi gauge) the duration will be one-half as long as when used at 1 atmosphere; and at 3 atmospheres will be one-third as long; 8. the condition of the apparatus. PREPARATION FOR USE The following procedure should be followed prior to donning tf apparatus: 1. Check cylinder pressure gauge for "FULL" indication* If in dicated cylinder pressure is below "FULL", recharge cylind..' or replace with a fully charged cylinder. ^ 2. Check that regulator by-pass valve (red knob) is closed (full clockwise), regulator shut-off valve (yellow knob) is open (full counter-clockwise) and control lever is in "OFF" posi tion. CAUTION DO NOT USE TOOLS TO OPEN OR CLOSE THE BY-PASS AND SHUT-OFF VALVES. CLOSE OR OPEN FINGER TIGHT ONL'i (SEE OVER: MAP 000887
