McMakin - 2009 July 23, 1987 Area Subject ^EM&TS - HS&EA Industrial Hygiene Asbestos Exposure Monitoring Attached are the results of asbestos monitoring for one day at the South Charleston Plant while removing asbestos from a line in pipe rack north of Building 250. Approximately 44 feet of line was stripped from a 4-inch product line. A mini-enclosure was used on a valve and 8 feet of line at ground level. Amended water was used throughout the abatement project. Both personal exposure samples were below 0.2 fiber/cc permissible exposure level standard per 0SHA asbestos standard 29CFR 1926.58. One personal sample was above the action level of 0.1 fiber/cc. Exposure monitoring may not be required in some instances where supplied air respirators in positive pressure mode are being used for asbestos abatement projects. We encourage use of supplied air respirators whenever possible. The area sample just outside the barricaded area showed less than a measurable amount of asbestos. Employees wore no street clothes, two pair of coveralls, headcovers, boots, gloves and A0 R57-A HEPA half-face cartridge respirators. They showered before lunch and at the end of the workday before leaving plant. Please inform if their exposure monitoring results as soon as possible. Have them sign and date this report and return it to M. A. Patel at Building 701-330.
