LETSINGER RE: INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE COMMITTEE MEETING A meeting of the Industrial Hygiene Committee was held on May 22, 1957 > in Building 800. The following members were in attendance: Dr. L. A. Block, H. H. Hannah, B. L. Tiedemann, G. Decker, C. L. Huey, J. H. Lowry, I. K. Kaighin, and B. D. Kent. A report was received from Mr. T. B. Bonney on his recent noise survey at the slitter area in the Shear Department. Apparently, no progress was accomplished by the partial enclosure and acoustical treatment of the chopper housing. Engineering will try cutting the speed of the scrap choppers at the No. 1 Slitter to determine the extent of relationship of chopper speed to the noise produced. Since a possibility of chromic acid dipping exists, arrangements have been made with Mr. J. Archibald in which the Committee would be notified at the time plans would be made to use the acid. The Engineering Division would then be provided information concerning the Bafe handling of the material and a meeting of the Industrial Hygiene Committee would be held. The use of vythene as a solvent for cleaning typewriters was discussed. The solvent has been used on a trial basis and seems to do a satisfactory Job of cleaning. Vythene is a non-inflammable solvent that has far less toxic properties than carbon tetrachloride. In view of such, the Committee approves the extended use of the solvent for typewriter cleaning for further consideration by the Accounting Division. Revisions in the Planning Division's duplicating equipment, basement of Building 808, have been completed. Teats will be conducted to determine the. amount ARD 044226 sir f I TO MESSRS. Solvent vapors at the ditto machine in the Mail Boom, Building 800, are not of a sufficient quantity to measure. Therefore, the Committee feels that the use of the equipment does not present a health hazard. Any distress caused by this infinitesimal amount would be due to a peculiar personal condition. The Committee possesses literature on the toxic qualities of ozone which is a product of welding. The information will be disseminated to the proper people in the event bus bar welding is resumed. Two cases involving Pydraul F-9 being sprayed into employees eyes were reported. No after-effects were experienced in either case. There were no new cases of chlorine inhalations.
