Grumbles August 22, 1984 MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET DISTRIBUTION As we have discussed the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard, promulgated November 23, 1983, and with first effective dates of November 25, 1985 requires the following: 1. An appropriate MSDS be sent to distributors and manufacturing purchasers with the initial shipment after the effective date. 2. The MSDS shall be provided with the shipment itself, or sent to the purchaser prior to or at the time of the shipment. 3. If a MSDS is changed or updated with significant new health hazard information, an updated sheet must be sent with the first shipment after the change. In other words, what was established last year as company practice is now required by law. It is time for another annual mailing, however, I would like to discuss the items below before proceeding with this years program. 1. Status of "legal contact" mailing list - Last years mailing, utilizing the price notification list, resulted in redundancy of mailing for many companies. With new and increased printing costs, this could be costly this year. 2. Capability to generate product specific list - price notification listings were by product groups, and this resulted in non-applicable MSDS's being mailed to customers, particularly in the surfactants area. The requirement for mailing updated MSDSs, as described, further makes product specific capability desirable. 3. Actual production of mailing labels, envelopes, etc. to do the mailing last year we copied the mailing list onto adhesive labels. 4. Assuring notification system for "new" customers in order that MSDSs can be sent. 5. Feasibility and practicality of mailing for 1984 based on the above. VVV 000016357
