Design Memo No. 1 Revision No. 0 Subject: Asbestos Bagging Improvement-
King City, CA
The effort to provide a dust-free bag for asbestos shipment is proceeding in two directions, both utilizing the existing bagging equipment and bag material.
A. Development of a good, reliable, single bag wrap which can be applied to all bags in both lines to replace the present unsatisfactory shrink wrap.
B. Development of a reliable bag closure system to prevent spillage from the bag valve.
For a more immediate solution to the present problem involving a limited number
of bags now requiring a double wrap for certain shipments, the plant has asked
that consideration be given to a duplicate bag wrap - pallet wrap installation in
or near the present storage shed.
`
An earlier plan to provide the double wrap installation in the present bagging area has been shelved because of limited space, interruption to production, and the need for double wrap on both bagging lines.
Advantages of applying the double wrap in the shed area are:
A. Both bagging lines can use the one installation.
B. The single wrapped product will already be stored in this area.
C. No changes will be required to existing machinery layout.
D. Startup problems and development will not hamper production.
E. Can be used to pallet wrap only for any RG-244 product.

Design Memo No. ] Revision No. 0
Two arrangements are described, both include either a shrink wrap or stretch wrap for individual bags and a shrink wrap or stretch wrap unit for pallets. Pallets will be brought from storage or the bagging lines, broken down, the bags sent through the wrapping machine, hand stacked on pallets, wrapped, then carried to a truck or storage area by fork lift truck. The sketch and estimates are based on shrink wrap; stretch wrap would require less space and probably cost less. Energy costs would also be less for stretch wrap (or envelope pack) because no heat tunnel is required.
Three operators will be required; no. 1 to open the pallet wrap and feed the bag wrap machine, no. 2 to palletize and operate the pallet wrap machine, and no. 3 to operate a lift truck.
Arrangement D (S-15079)
A straight line layout occupies a space inside the southeast corner of the storage
shed three bays long by twenty feet wide with an enclosure on the outside and
two ends. Access is provided through both east and west sides.
Estimated Cost $279,000
Extra for two bay extension to north end of shed to compensate for storage area lost.
Estimated Cost $ 65,000
Arrangement H ($-15079)
This is the same layout.but in a lean-to addition at the east side of the storage shed and with walls on four sides.
' Estimated Cost $300,000
When the specific equipment proposed is known a more accurate estimate can be made.
