Dear Mr. Kirby: Thanks very much for your letter of February 3rd and for the statement of the method of handling which you have decided upon in the case of the property of Ethyl Corporation which, is now in the Kettering Laboratory* This method is indeed very favorable to the Kettering Laboratory, so much so that I an somewhat embarrassed at having raised the issue. I am sure, however, that both you and Mr* Perdue will realine that I felt called upon to reaffirm, by appropriate action, a necessary policy of the Laboratory in its posture as a financially and professionally independent medical organization in this University, his has been questioned on occasion, and we have been investigated, on one occasion, as to our agreements and internal working relation ship (since this is a public institution), in the belief, on the part of one attacker that he would find evidence of our nefarious alliances with industry. He failed to do so, but that in the point. Our posture is, in effect, our only valuable asset, and I am prepared to preserve it against the appearance ox' evil, since ''appearances" are the very things that convict in the public eye as caught by the press.
