T. deTreville March 4 1970 Me whe eee ern ...~ At 8:30 today 3/4/70 I met with Dr. deTreville in his office in Pittsburgh to outline for him the purposes and the general program for the Asbestos Conference which we seek to hold in Du Pont I told him I did not think that this Conference could serve as a prototype instruction meeting of the type which Industrial Hygiene Foundation hopes to begin providing for member companies This is because of the austerity program and our obligation to do as much of the work in connection with this Conference by ourselves as is possible I specifically asked for his participation in the presen- tation of the health aspects of asbestos We discussed a review of health aspects which would include the history of lung disease of asbestos including asbestosis carcinoma and mesothelioma Dr. deTreville is enthusiastic about participating and has told me dates that he will be available on any one of the following 1 2 6 7 or 9. I am to write him a letter reviewing what April we dis- cussed today and the tentative program outline He reviewed for me some of the functions which IHF is seeking to fulfill These would include participatiopn articipation in the combined Accreditation Program for Industry in Industrial Health This joint effort will bring together the Occupational Health Institute the Industrial Medical Association the American Industrial Hygiene Association the American Conference for Governmental Industrial Hygienists the Academy of Occupational Medicine and will supersede an an accreditation which was begun a long time by the American ago College College College of Surgeons He spoke of obtaining applications for accred- Col egitation itation itation from Companies in which they would describe their effort in industrial ita ionindustrial industrial industrial industrial industrial industrial health including procedures for review of hazardous pro- ceses Bel e ces es cesses cesses cesses or operations such as that in which I was engaged yesterday Belle Belle . He thinks that this kind of information should be avail- in obtain g able able in connectiwo itnh the government's expected interest in obtaining obtaoininbg taining obtaining data on compliance with health compliance and safety safety laws Note He told me that later this month he will address a meet- ing of the American Textile Manufacturing Association which will be attended by Du Pont's president Mr. McCoy Dr. deTreville is trying to provide for the the Foundation as a source of research pathology members He has discovered at Charleston South lent candidate pathologist for a replacement for future needs of for industrial Carolina an excel- will Paul Gross who will March 9 1970 Page 2 ASBESTOS CONFERENCE retire in three years The candidate Dr. Harley is expected to remain at South Carolina in the intervening years and carry on a research program associated with the effort of Dr. Gross in Pittsburgh the department work A staff of pathologists under Dr. head will be available for outside Harley and pathology The published proceedings of the Foundation's Fibrous Fibrous Dust Seminar which I attended about a year and half ago will will issue later this month Copies of the Proceedings should be avail- able for those who attend the Asbestos Conference Part of the proceedings consist of an address by an epidemiologist Enterline of Pittsburgh who had data on the fate of persons exposed to asbestos Some were exposed for brief periods such as two years then removed from industry and later in their lives developed lung cancer Others beginning work about the same time and continuing to work in the asbestos industry developed asbestosis and from this many subsequently died These data should be described in the Proceedings This is an indication that high exposure levels for fairly brief periods may subse- quently result in deleterious effects Again it may be indica- tive of the production of lung cancer by asbestos even when asbestosis does not develop --"-- ------ ----, legtt F.
