Five samples were collected in the breath zones of Jim Coons, Bob Ruiz, and Zrasmo Villa, (B & R), as they tore out Kaylo-10 and 20 insulation from the top and bettor flanges on Ho. 27*2 converter at Oxide I in preparation for a catalyst change. In sulation on the converter could cot be vetted because it was too hot, however, in sulation on the pad and flying dust was sprayed with water. This was a very dusty operation with the wind bloving the dust a good distance downwind. Bendix C-115 air pumps and Millipore filter cartridges were used to collect the samples. Slides were prepared and counted using the Kiion Sub P-Kt binocular phase contrast nioro. scope. REC0M-E.DATI0J5: 2fce data indicates that this operation was within the five fibers per cubic centimeter longer than five microns, standard for the eight hour tine weighted average (WA). Altho the data indicates this operation to be within the standard, it is good hygienic practice to wear respiratory protection while hand ling asbestos materials. A better effort must be made to iceep people out of the area during tear-outs by roping it off and posting asbestos warning signs. REUARAS: As of July 1, 1976, TWA concentrations of asbestos fibers longer than five microns will not be allcved to exceed tvo fibers/ml (Federal Register, Vcl. 37, No. 110, June 7, 1972.)
