Mr. W. P. F l i e g c Turbine Specialist General I-lectric Corp. 814 Commerce Drive Oak Brook, IL 60521 Dear Mr. Fliege:
It is o b v i o u s tha t my Lett er o l M a r c h 25, 1.97 7 does not a d d r e s s the p r o b l e m d i s c u s s e d in y o u r l e t t e r to me of May 12, 1977.
T h e r e is no simple method that your field engineers can use to identify asbestos insulation prior to removal. The simplest laboratory procedure would involve examination of a sample by a petrographic microscopist.
A great majority of the pipe and block insulations m a n u f a c t u r e d p r i o r to 1972 c o n t a i n e d asbestos. The bes t a d vice I can give is to e x a m i n e a small piece of the .insulation and if it a ppears to co n t a i n fibrous reinforcement, assume that the fibrous material is a s b e s t o s .
Very truly yours,
FM F :jh
