Parker Rockdale Works October 28, 1975 SAl'ETY AMD HEALTH COMMITTEE MEETING The Safety and Health Conmittee met on Thursday, October 25, 1975, at 3:00 PM in Room 21B, Building 80. In attendance were Dr. E. R. Goltra, Messrs. H. W. Franseen, J. D. Shinn, Freddy Olbrich, Finis Black, T.L.Stuller, Ike Korenek, Charlie Janak, H. P. Dick and co-chairman W. G. Henson and E. B. Parker. Personnel Walkway The new personnel walkway along the east side of Bldg. 64 has been completed and is being used. Mr. Dick suggested that an alternate route for inclement weather might be established inside Bldg. 34 along the extreme tst wall. The disadvantage to this alternate route is that it would resc . in large numbers of people walking through production areas, and this increases accident potential. Lunchrooms Remodelling of-the -Potlining-lun'chr<53rm-as scheduled to "began In few ~ ' weeks. As with the Line 7 lunchroom, further work in this area will depend on how well the new Potlining lunchroom is maintained by its users. Mr. Korenek requested that committee members meet with Potlining people to review these responsibilities. (This will be done after construction begins.) ' The hazard of using the steam cleaner around lunchroom electrical outlets was discussed. Before using this equipment, the janitor must be sure that electrical power to the lunchrooms is turned off. There is at least one lunchroom where this is not possible. In this case, until receptacle covers are installed, or until wiring changes make it possible to turn off the power, steam cleaning will not be done. Mr. Stuller will be sure that all janitors are trained in this area. Mr. Olbrich pointed out that the lunchroom in Bldg. 56 is still in bad shape, although steam cleaning has helped. Foot Protection Dr. Goltra explained the anatomy of a foot to the group and described the consequences of various types of foot injuries. In light of our recent rash of foot injuries, the committee was asked to review the present foot protection program and determine how it can be strengthened. McGregor October 28, 19Y5 Pago Two Crone Ladders - Lines 1-6 Mr. Janak pointed out that the ladders in overhead potroom cranes in Lines 1-6 were secured in the up position by chains. There is concern that this method of securing the ladders would delay help from the floor in the event of an emergency. It was also noted that the chains were damaging the ladders. This situation was checked by J. H. Greene, S. J. Spell and D. R. LaRoque. The chain can easily be released from the floor by using a "light stick.'" There is no significant signs of wear or damage to the ladders due to chain usage. Potroom Aisle Clearance Mr. Black expressed concern at the lack of clearance between anode butts and carbon stored against the wall. This condition restricts necessary movement of welding machines. Mr. Shinn will check into this and take steps to relieve this congestion. Dust in Bldg. 56 Mr. Olbrich commented on the dusty conditions in Bldg. 56, especially during periods when butt grinding is being done. Mr. Franseen told the committee that new ductwork for the mill is on hand and awaiting installation. (Will be installed weekend of November 1.) Asbestos Insulation Mr. Black reported that there was some insulation material stored in the yard outside of Bldg. 1^5 that appeared to be asbestos. Mr. Parker will check and determine if the material is in fact asbestos, or whether it is the asbestos-free material which has been adopted as a substitute. (A sample of this material was given to our Lab 10-28-75 for evaluation. The results will indicate if asbestos is present or not.) Traffic Hazard Mr. Black commented that at the end of the day Maintenance people working in Bldg. 27 have to rush to the locker room at the South end of the plant in order to catch the rides home. Their haste creates a traffic hazard on the plant roads. If these people could be assigned lockers in the North locker room, the problem would be solved. Mr. Stuller will look into this. Roof Tans - Bldg. 59 Mr. Black reported that not all of the roof ventilators in Bldg. 59 are operative. His particular concern was the area near the Goodman conveyor where people load brick for flue repair. Mr. Parker will check with Electrical Maintenance to find out what can be done to t 411082 0316
