The survey work was requested by Ur. W. Hazard of the OwensIllinois Class Company, Toledo, Ohio, office. Members of The Saranac Laboratory staff participating in the survey were: T.U. Durkan and E.C.J. Urban. The following individuals were contacted at Sayreville. Mr. O.W. Pfeifer, Plant Manager Mr. William Barker, Personnel Manager Mr. P.E. Gillls, Safety Director Mr. John Roades, Quality Control Engineer The survey was made in the company of Mr. W. Hazard. Its purpose was to examine the plant operations with the view of discovering any hazards to health which might exist as the results of the raw materials handled and the finished product produced. Raw Materials 1. Diatomaceous Earth The products of several U.S. manufacturers including JohnaManville. The earth was not a "pure" product (100 SiO?) but contained contaminants as clays. 2. Silica flour (high grade of free crystalline SiOj grounl to a fine size) from Pennsylvania Pulverizer Company. 3. Tripoli (small quantities) from Illinois Mineral Company. L. Lime, Warren Company, Balfont, Pennsylvania. 5. Asbestos, Chrysotile, Johns-Uanville-^uabec, ran^Ha Asbestos, Amosite (iron bearing) South Africa. 5. Xayolin (clay) small amounts from Georgia. 7. Cement, commercial grades. Finished Products "M^lo" product in tile forms for structural uses. Reinforced with wire for roofing. Sheets for fire-proof doors and panels. In round forms for pipe insulation covering. Two types of "Kaylo" were made. "Light density" and "Heavy density". Both contain different mixtures of the same original components.
