Shoun Re: Waste Minimization at Manufacturing Locations The Vinyl Institute Health, Safety and Environment Committee is considering activities to minimize the disposal of off-spec or scrap PVC from member-company manufacturing facilities. We believe there is enough resin and compound scrap being sent to landfills to justify this activity. However, we have no data substantiating this belief. Presumably, all member-companies have arrangements with scrap dealers and recyclers. It is not our intent to compete with these people but rather to explore alternatives for materials that they cannot utilize. This cooperative effort could be as simple as an information exchange on how each plant minimizes waste. At the other end of the spectrum, one could visualize a member-company jointly-owned recycling facility that would process, upgrade and sell resin and compound. Because this has potential commercial implications, we are interested in your thoughts before proceeding with anything but the most preliminary steps. The Health, Safety and Environment Committee will meet on January 23. This topic will be on the agenda.
