PPG At the urging of PPG we have made an effort to improve the Hegman grind of Cyastab 40. As a result, oil absorption values increased to unacceptable levels. A meeting was held with PPG research and plant personnel at their Allison Park, Pa., Research Center in an effort to resolve the question of exactly what PPG needs and what we can supply. Ultimately, PPG needs material that will pass their salt spray test. Since this isn't a practical QC test, they have tried to find other parameters which would correlate with salt spray. At this point they be lieve that oil absorption and chemical composition (ratio of 4PBC032Pb (OH)2. PbO to 2PbC03.Pb (OH) 2 )affect salt spray, but the data seen thus far is far from conclusive. They therefore want material with a maximum oil absorption of 15 and a composition of at least 68% 4PbC03*2 Pb(OH)PbO. Since Hegman grind does not affect product quality, only production time, they are willing to relax the grind spec ification to a 41 minimum. CY\Nl 1-000195 V. TECHNICAL (continued) A. PPG (continued) We also discussed setting up a joint research project to study the effect of various stabilizer properties on salt spray. Cyanamid will provide samples of stabilizer with as wide a variation in oil absorption, chemical composition, etc. as possible, and PPG will run salt spray and x- ray crystallography (for composition). B. TENNECO We have established that Cyastab 523-0 supplied 1 year age to Tenneco has the same electrial properties as the material they are complaining about, and the difference be tween Cyastab 523-0 and Tribase XL - oiled is very slight. Accordingly, their complaint is not justified. We will need considerably more information about Tenneco's application before we can do anything about developing a stabilizer that will perform in this specific application. C. NAP We have been unable to detect the large size particles NAP claims are in our Cyastab 15. We have checked production samples, returned samples and material returned by NAP. All retains, are within our shipping specifications. We once again are reviewing this problem with all plant personnel, are inspecting the equipment and log sheets and tighting up our sampling technique. For the next shipment to NAP we will sample each bag packed, make up composites and analyze for particle size within the limit of our laboratory's capabilities. We have worked with vendors as to the cost of automatic samplers. Cost - approximately $5k/ Jim Daly. I will visit NAP after the next shipment. D. The magnetic separator has been installed in the blender packer train which will now assure all lead phthalates and all blends of any stabilizers are essentially free of mag netic particles. z-r *- . CY\A/\ A-000196 i--: I* GENERAL A. Lead price has leveled off at 24$/Lb. With the battery demand tapering off there will be pressure to let the price slip. However, with Asarco idling their Glover smelter for two months (3/1 - 5/1/84) and labor contracts coming up with St. Joe & Amax there may be enough pressure to hold at 24C. B. The MSDGC sampled the plant effluent the week of 2/20. Results of idle testing of their first split sample at an out-side lab indicates we may receive a citation for our effluent containes higher than the 0.5ppm lead allowed. C. PERSONNEL Salary - 12 (included 5 working non- exempt working supervisors) Hourly - 13 The plant observed 2/20 as a holiday. D. Transfer of the Elastomers inventory to this location has proceeded very smoothly. E. Extrudate 15,000 lbs. of the 4mm extrudate has been sent to Cerock for trial. A second 40k lbs. shipment cf lead stabilizers has been sent to Envirostrand for use in their extrusion process.
