0Bust, June 3, 19Wi NOTE TO FILE Re: Texas City Brain Tumor Investigation On Tuesday, June 2, 1981 I called Dr. Sanford Leffingwell at NIOSH to determine some information on the new brain tumor case, William R. Saffore. The immediate cause of death listed on the death certificate for this case states, "Probable pulmonary embolism"; on the second line due to "Probable phlebothrombosis in extremities or pelvis"* on line number three, due to "postoperative meningioma". Because this was apparently a benign meningioma it will not be included in Dr. Leffingwell's case-control study; because this employee was a black male he will not be included Dr. Waxweiller's cohort study. This case died in Los Angeles County General Hospital in California and no hospital records are available from which to obtain a copy of the surgical pathology report. However, Dr. Leffingwell has had some correspondence with the hospital which indicate that the employee had an operation on December 3, 1963 at which time a craniotomy was performed and total excision of a benign meningioma was accomplished. The employee died a few days later due to complications unrelated to the meningioma. On a more general note. Dr. Leffingwell stated that both he and Dr. Waxweiller are in the process of writing the final reports or at least the first draft of the final reports for this study. He further stated that although they would have to have approval of the reports by Dr. Halperin, the branch chief, they intended to try to minimize review beyond that and proceed immediately to send a draft report to Union Carbide for trade secret review.
