It is important that you use a carefully fitted respirator equipped with asbestos trapping filters that has been approved for this kind of usage. Typically, fresh air respirators are best in this environment. Disposable, or particle masks, are not acceptable and will allow fibers to pass through. Check with respirator providers for the latest approved equipment.
In addition to the respirator, there are other measures you will need to take to insure your safety, such as:
Wearing clothing with long sleeves. Removing clothing at work for safe handling. Bagging clothing in plastic bags. Segregating clothing for laundering at special wash facilities as soon as
possible to prevent the release of airborne fibers of asbestos; you must also inform anyone laundering clothing which may have asbestos fibers of this possibility so that they may take the proper precautions. Washing hands, face and hair well and changing clothes before going home.
Do not take either wearing appropriate PPE or the handling of asbestos-contaminated clothing lightly. The damage you might do to your lungs is irreversible, and wearing work clothes home would put not only you, but those you live with at risk as well.
