Several workers were interviewed and the follow in g information was furnished by Mr. Mett. J There have been no cases of A ll new employees receiv e a illn e s s sin ce that of Mr. Nathan Porter .aa year preplacement examination which is givey by Dr. ago. Milto n Schleagff who i s located in the neighborhood. Mr. Mett is not certain as to whether th is examination includes a chest x-ray, but i s o f the opinion that i t d oes. The men are x-rayed annually by the Tuberculosis Mobile Unit. He was advised that in addition to t h is , and for the b en efit o f both worker and Company a lik e, th a t he should have a ll of h is men x-rayed at le a s t once a year, and th is he said he would tr y to have done. The p lan t i s much cleaner sin ce the asb estosis case a year ago. ' Crushing, screening, and bagging operations appear to be adequately exhaust-ventilated. The men are fu r nished w ith approved dust respirators but seldom wear them. Only one was observed . in actual u se during the trip through the plant. Mr, Mett said that he had urged th e men to wear respirators and said th a t i f I would give him a w ritten n otice to th a t e f f e c t , he would have i t posted in the plant and perhaps th a t would give the recommendation a l i t t l e more fo rce. Mr. Smith, the foreman, stated th at he co llected the resp irators p erio d ica lly , cleaned them, inserted new f i l t e r s , and carried a com p le te lin e o f spare parts. Several o f the men pfbduced th eir resp irators which they keep in impervious metal boxes, and th ese pieces of equipment showed th a t they had had some u se. flyi in a l l i t i s believed that working conditions in the plant have improved markedly; however, annual x-ray o f the workers in the plant and the wearing of resp irators during dusty periods w i l l be recommended.
