General Toxicity
Ammonium perfluorononanoate (C-9) has moderate acute oral toxicity with an LD50 in rats o f
407 mg/kg
0 1984). No information is available on its effect o f the skin or eyes
o f animals. B y the acute inhalation route, is C-9 also moderately toxic with a 4-hour ALC in the
rat o f 590 mg/m3
1985a;
1989).
In a 14-day feeding study in mice, increased liver weight was seen at as low a dose as 1 ppm
(0.12 mg/kg/day)
1985b). Liver changes were also seen in rats acutely exposed to as
low a concentration as 67 mg/m3
1985a; ^ ^ 1 9 8 7 ) . Liver effects were also
produced by a similar compound, ammonium perfluoroctanoate (C-8)
1981).
Carcinogenic Potential
No information is available.
CompampSanitized. Does noieo****
Mutagenic Potential
In the Ames Salmonella bioassay, C-9 was not mutagenic
1984).
Developmental/ Reproductive Toxicity
No information is available.
Basis for AEL
The toxicity o f C-9 was compared to that o f C-8. Both compounds appear to produce similar toxic effects at similar dose levels. Based on a NOAEL o f 1 mg/m3 in a subchronic inhalation study in rats, an AEL o f 0.01 mg/m3 (8-hour TWA) was established for C-8. Based on analogy to C-8, the same 0.01 mg/m3 AEL was recommended for C-9.
C-9 was updated in 1991,1996, and again in 2001. No additional toxicity information was found.
