The spring scheduled meeting of the T&R Committee, Mineral Fiber Section, convened at $ a.m. at the sucunitt Hotel in New York City with the following members in attendance: C. E* Ernst--JM V. Gubar--CSG V. T. Irwin--PPG L. H. Mills--CSG The following agenda items were discussed: (l) SUGGESTED REVISIONS TO FEDERAL SPECIFICATION KH-I-558 (T,. Kills) Action: Tne revisions sent by the Committee members were dis cussed and the items encircled in red in the attached specification were to be deleted from the specification. The Committee requested that each manufacturer send a list of products that they would sell under Class I of Table II, Page 7 Class I product is designated ns a block or board but not load bearing. It was also re quested that Lou Kills advise the Federal Supply Agency that the manufacturers requested that the specification retain the rigidity test to keep blanket from appearing in Table II, Class I. Also Lou Mills is to set a rr.eetin date with Federal Supply and present our comments. (2) ACOUSTICAL PERFORMANCE 0? DUCT LINEPS AND DUCT SYSTEMS (u. Gubar) Action: V. Gubar informed the Committee that CSG had their 1.5r duct liner tested and each member had received the test data from Rivcrbnnk. V. Gubar was to call Piveroank and determine what materials were received and advise the members who were delinquent. The subject of acoustical performance of duct system,', war. discussed. C. Ernst and the writer informed the Committee ; that this subject came up at the Duct Systems Committee meeting. Yfnat is needed is a test method for the determi nation of attenuation of sound in ducts. The writer informed the Committee that )'olt, Boranic & Newrr.nn is capable of doing this type of work and that it nny.be to. the benefit of NIKA to have a tost conducted by this group on member ducts. This subject will be discussed in further detail at the next meeting. (3) KAVAL SHIPBOARD FIRE RISK CRITERIA (W. Gubar) Action; Phase I of this program had as its objective to survey the fire test criteria used in the selection of material for ship use, and suggestion of possible modifications to the present material specification to improve fire safety. For insulation materials the flamespread and smoke vere considered by the report as the cost important properties. The report stated that smoke movement was much faster and more extensive than flamespread ana often becomes a more disabling factor than the actual spread of .fire. Mr. Lou Mills pointed out that this is a five (5) years program and that the second phase would be to make a large scale fire study to investigate the contribution of material in which the criteria was set by the radiant panel, potential heat and smoke density chamber test. Mr. V. Irvin informed the Committee of a very severe situa tion in New York, Dallas and Fort V.'orth. It appears that codes in these cities are written utilizing the heated tube test as the criteria for incombustibility. The Rational Building codes use the heated tube test, ICDO uses the heated tube test and Flash Point (ASTK-093)--30CA ar.c Standard Codes uses the heated tube test. W. Gubar is to write to Jack Bono at TIL Laboratories con cerning the problem of fire rating by codes and determining what action UL is to take concerning the use of heated tube test instead of the flamespread test. Mr. Irwin also brought an article appearing in the Jar.., 1971 FIRE JOURNAL entitled "New York Office Building Fire" ( copy'attachea). Mr. Ernst discussed briefly the BPA3 Report on "Fire Loads in Buildings" and Lou Mills is to get copies for the Com mittee. (4) COMBINED MILITARY SPECIFICATION (L. Lach) Action: Mr. Lach Is still working on the project. 0 (5) COMBINED ASTM SPECIFICATION ON MINERAL FIBER PRODUCTS (C. Erast) Action: Kr. C. E. Ernst io still working on the project. (6) SUGGESTED REVISIONS TO KH-I-^5 Action: V. Gubar has received members comments and will revise the specification and send it for comments. When all of the acoustical data is received, this information will be incorporated into Table II. (7) NEW BUSINESS -- FACING & JACKET SPECIFICATION (L. Mills) Action: Lou Kills suggested that NIKA write a specification on jackets incorporating tensile strength, fire test, moisture vapor transmission, and puncture.- It was his thinking that ve should have three types of jacket for pipe insulation: (1) jacket for consealed spaces, (2) jacket for exposed spaces and (3) glass cloth type jacket. There is presently a Committee in ASTM in which ?<r. Gubar and Mr. Kills are members working on facings and jackets for insulation. No conclusions were made as to what ve should do but each Committee member is tp think about this problem and come prepared to discuss it more fully at the next meeting. (8)' COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION Action: Kr. Irwin informed the Committee that Paul Lossc had written the method for coefficient of friction and that it would be prepared during the week of April l8 to have the Committee at their testing laboratory in Shelby, North Carolina to show us the equipment.
