Sunderland - 2009 January 13, 1987 EM&TS - HS&EA Industrial Hygiene Asbestos Exposure Monitoring at the Institute Plant Attached are the results of the asbestos monitoring performed while the Construction Department insulators stripped insulation from a 2-inch pipe, located in the pipe rack between Building 9 and the Number 1 powerhouse of Plant 512. An insulator was also monitored while stripping asbestos insulation from miscellaneous lines on a colander near Building 12. There were a total of six insulators and one laborer on the pipe rack job, one of each on the colander job. A11 employees were equipped with either an A0R57-A or Willson R12 HEPA cartridge, half-face respirator. They were also equipped with boots, gloves, head sock and 2 pair of coveralls. Each employee indicated that they were wearing no street clothes under the coveralls, and that each showered or would shower before leaving the work place. The results indicate that all" but one sample exceeded, or could have statistically exceeded, the 0.2 fiber/cc Permissible Exposure Level, established by 0SHA for an 8-hour workday (TWAg). The sample that did not exceed the PEL was well above the 0.1 fiber/cc Action Level, also established by 0SHA. The employees indicated that the working quarters, in the pipe rack, was more restricted than the previous monitoring on this job. Since the insulators are working in tighter quarters, you may want to consider taking extra precautions and using more water before, during and after removing the insulation, to keep the airborne fibers at a minimum.
