Attached please find 10 copies of "Fire Tests on Cedar Shake Roof Decks" as prepared by B. C. Research, a division of the British Columbia Research Council, which Is highly regarded In the technical community as a competent non-profit industrial organization. This report summarizes results of tests on several different types of roofing assemblies. However, this Research Committee application relates to construction described as 1A. By extension, it applies also to Assemblies IB and 1C. The only difference between these two Assemblies and 1A is of no consequence Insofar as the fire test results are concerned; namely, the glass fibres in !B and 1C were extended in both directions Whereas the fibres in 1A extended in one direction. There is no difference In the fire performance of the two felts. Your attention Is directed, therefore, to the results of Tests 2, 4, 6 and 7. and to the conclusions on pages 8 and 9 of the report. As mentioned in the report, a 16mm motion picture record of the tests was made, and It would be our pleasure to show this movie to members of the Research Committee, individually or collectively. We respectfully request that the Modified Cedar-Asbestos Roof System be granted an equivalency to fire-retardant Class C roofing as defined in 3203(e)5 on page 436 of the Uniform Building Code, 1970 Edition. Research contains fire tests on seven different panels , and only those psnsix tests marked 1-A, 1-B and 1-C ore relevant to ft th Research, report and tests 2A-- 2-3- 2-0- and 2--D are not to be considered in the deliberations of this research requefit. All teats were conducted on roof slopes of 5/12, While the spread of flame test does not appear as tested in this .report such spread of flame test was* conducted and paesed prior to this teat report. ' The problem of getting a 15 ft. test deck in place was insurmountable so it was decided by th obo attending and conducting the testB that the flying brand test under U/L 790 - 1969 waa a much more severe teat and if the fire did not spread upward in this test as defined under the spread of flame test it would not be necessary to conduct the spread of flame teat. . DSSCRIPTIOI-: t The roof deck iB to be 1/2" T & G plywood sheathing with an exterior glue line. Thel plywood ia to comply with Chapter 25 of the Uniform Building Code. The square edges of the plywocd shall rest on a 2 .x- 4 wood- block or roof structural member of not leas than a wood block covering not less than 1/2 of the 2 width. The plywood shall be nailed to the roof members in accordance with Chapter 25. Ons sheet of 5*5" asbestos felt shall be laid over the deck starting at the leading edge of the roof and tacked or stapled before the first course of shakes ere applied. Wood shakes shall be 01 a mxnisxa tnominal 5/4 to 5/4 butt thickness 24" in lepgth end of '/1 grade. Shakes will then be applied as in Section 5205 Subsection 6, except that in the case of the felt shingled between each course such felt shall be an a sbestos felt as in Standard 52-14.
