BENNETT INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE COMMITTEE L iS ----- A meeting of the Industrial Hygiene Committee was held on March 4, 1958* The following were in attendance: Dr.,L. A. Block, G. Decker, B. L. Tiedemann, , *- i C. L. Huey, J. H. Lowry, R. H. Hansen, and I. K. Kaighin. A professor and three Btudents from the Department of Hygiene and Preventive Medicine of the State University of Iowa were guests at Davenport on February 27, 1958. The Committee met with the guests to discuss the various phases of our hygiene program. Several points were raised in the discussion on which the Committee believes some action should be taken. Testing of our Banitary water is not being done at the present time. The Hygiene Committee recommended that a regular sampling and testing program be set up promptly. The fee charged for this program would be nominal. In addition to giving us reliable information on the adequacy of our chlorination and filtration systems, we would have reports in our files on which we could base our answers to any inquiries that may be made in the future. The Iowa State Department of Labor has been showing increased interest in this area. The Engineering Division has been requested to take care of the water testing program. A suggestion waB introduced regarding inspection of our plant cafeterias. Although the general condition and appearance of the food preparing and dining facilities are good, the Committee suggested that the Medical, Safety, and Training Departments discuss the merits of a periodic check of the cafeterias. ARD 044213 The use of morpholine as an additive to our steam was discussed. The material is added by the supplier of the steam, the Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Company. We have been informed that the amount of the additive is maintained at a level of from. 2 to k PPM. Since steam is used in one of the cafeteria cookers. 10 MESSRS. L.T.LSTSINGEB &. S.H.HENNETT DATE MARCH 7, 1958 SHEET NO. 2 we have requested information on morpholine from our supplier. The Safety Department reported on the recent survey of rest rooms. The conditions were unfavorable in some areas during the first week of the periodic check; however, there has been a marked improvement during the past month. A sanitation employee was absent from work for several days which apparently caused the problem to develop. Steps have been taken to prevent a recurrence of this problem. There were no new cases of chlorine exposure reported to the Medical Department during the past month. F. H.
