HNU instrument readings and 15 minute personnel monitoring samples were obtained while initially opening cars after draining. Area samples were obtained with monitoring pumps, covering the entire process of draining water from cars to sump, normally A to 5 hours. Sampling is continuous to insure that cleaning personnel are not over exposed to vinyl chloride during the tank car cleaning process. The OSHA standard for vinyl chloride in air is 1 PPM averaged over an 8 hour period and a ceiling of 5 PPM averaged over a 15 minute excursion period. Based on these results, present cleaning procedures should protect employees from over-exposure to vinyl chloride. J. L.
