RE: Following Up...EPA Statement on Chemtrails
Good morning Ruth and Karen,
Here are the responses you requested. I'm sending these on behalf of my colleagues Robert and Enesta.
Attributable to an EPA spokesperson:
When jet aircrafts operate at high altitudes they emit tiny combustion-related particles as part of the exhaust emissions from the engine. These particles act as condensation nuclei. High-altitude water vapor present in the ambient atmosphere reacts with these nuclei and sublimates into ice crystals otherwise known as contrails. These contrails then spread due to atmospheric turbulence and sometimes join with other contrails and expand into large, natural-looking clouds with cirrus characteristics that can cover large areas of the sky. (Cirrus clouds are wispy white, usually a natural phenomenon, consisting of minute ice crystals formed at high altitudes of 20,000 to 40,000 feet. These are normally associated with thunderstorms and the jet stream.) For a contrail to form there must be enough moisture in the air and the temperature must be cold enough to form ice crystals at the altitude at which the jet is flying. If the temperature is too warm or the air is too dry, contrails will not form.
In September 2000, EPA published a document entitled, "Aircraft Contrails Factsheet," in conjunction with NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This fact sheet describes the formation, occurrence, and effects of condensation trails or contrails.
It is located on EPA's aviation web site at: www.epa.gov/otaq/regs/nonroad/aviation/420f00005.pdf.
Information from the Air Force about military aircraft and their atmospheric and environmental effects can be found at www.epa.gov/otaq/regs/nonroad/aviation/afd-051013-001.pdf. In addition, NASA has two web sites with information on contrails: (1) http://science-edu.larc.nasa.gov/contrail-edu/* has information on the history and science of contrails as well as answers to frequently asked questions; and (2) http://cloudsgate2.larc.nasa.gov/cgibin/site/website?c=contrails* has viewers, tools, and references to NASA's work with contrails.

Good morning Mr. Daguillard:
Karen Halliburton passed your email onto me for review.

I am the managing editor of 50BOLD, a lifestyle online publication for those aged 50 and over that will premiere next month. Ms. Halliburton has written a story for us on chemtrails and we would like to present a fair and balanced picture for our readers which is why we would like a statement from your organization.
There are those who believe that these visible sky trails consist of chemical or biological agents that are released as part of a covert operation. Theorists have posited that the chemicals are meant to control the climate, to harm humans or to kill them. Non-believers, on the other hand, are convinced that the chemtrails are merely condensed water of a vapor trail.
We are aware that the EPA's stance on chemtrails is that it is wholly based on conspiracy theories and we would like to offer our readers a statement from your agency that speaks to this position.
If you can please provide us with a statement by close of business day, 5:00 pm, EST, Wednesday, September 20, we would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you for this consideration and I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Ruth Manuel-Logan Managing Editor 50BOLD
