It would appear from these analysis thQt the Tarioue exhaust points on the machines are operating ery efficiently. Z think it is rather odd that no attsapt has teen made to evaluate the particle size. Undoubtedly the Department feels that this data would be superfluous in view of the extremely low counts. It is difficult to set ea accurate MAC (xaxls.ua allowable con centration) for the dust liberated lato the air at your various Kaylo processing nachines, la analysis of dust fron the dust collector was analysed by the laboratory of. the U. S. Public Eealth Service and was found to eontaia 13% free silica aad 5 to 12% asbestos. As both of these aaterlals have about the sane degree of toxicity, an MAC of 20.0 million would be permissible, assuming the dust breathed by the men to be the sane as that eaught in the dust collector. Experiments by a great nunber of investigators over the past years have shown that dust at the breathing level of the workers often has a different analysis than dust eaught la the collector. The explanation is a natter of particle site -- certain parts of the raw notarial break up more readily than others and result in different analyses for different site fractions of dust. All that we eaa say, with any reasonable degree of eertaiaty, is that the MAC for Kaylo dust would very likely be somewhere between 5.0 aad 20.0 Million particles per eubie foot. Fortunately, dust eounts at your Kaylo processing machines have been so low that an exact MAC is not too necessary.
