The questions w i l l be referre d to as #1, #2, etc. in the fo llo w in g comments by employees. The questions are as fo llo w s:
#1: Have you read the whole booklet?
#2: Do you understand the health ris k s associated w ith breathing excessive concentrations o f asbestos?
#3: Do you understand that smoking increases the health ris k s connected with asbestos?
#4: Do you understand that you w i ll have to fo llo w ce rta in work ru le s set by Bendix to protect you?
#5: Do you have any questions about what you have read in th is booklet?
RANDALL LAMON
Charles Boling: here now?
#5, yes.
What is the r is k fo r people who work
Bobby Prock: #5, yes. Why do Bendix employees have to read a
booklet about asbestos and health? What becomes o f the questions
and answers by employees about asbestos a ft e r they have been signed
and turned in? Can asbestos corns, asbestosis, cancer o f the lungs,
and mesothelioma become a health problem as a r e s u lt o f one asbestos
fib e r ? Why were the la s t questions by employees never answered?
Tom Guinn: #2, not com pletely, #5, yes. Was not informed about the
health hazard when I was hired on 4/15/68 nor provided w ith protec
t iv e equipment to keep me from becoming contaminated with asbestos u n t il OSHA was implemented.
Clyde Brewer: #2, not com pletely, #5, yes. Why w asn't I informed
o f the p o ssib le dangers o f asbestos back on 5/21/68 when I became
an employee o f Bendix? Why wasn't I given any form o f p ro te ctiv e
devices to wear to help protect my health? Why has the company only
in the la s t few years begun to inform us o f the p o ssib le dangers and
only, in t h e ir words "in excessive amounts"? What is the d iffe re n c e
in 1 fib e r or 10 fib e r s working into the lungs and causing in fe c tio n
and diseases? Is time instead o f the amount, the thing the company
has on t h e ir side and the reason fo r t h e ir previous lack o f concern?
Why does the company always give us inform ation about our health and
safety in b its and pieces instead o f laying i t a l l out on the table?
John Woodby: #2, yes. When I came to work at the Bendix Corporation
on 7/19/65, I was not informed by Bendix that asbestos was harmful to
my health in any way. I found out asbestos was harmful to my health
some years la t e r a ft e r watching several programs on te le v is io n about asbestos being harmful to your body.

Tom Casteel: #2, yes. Commented I d id n 't know the health ris k s o f breathing asbestos in 1970 when I hired in .
Mac Stepp: #2, yes, but commented "now, but not fo r the f i r s t 10 years I worked in i t , " #5, yes. Why were we not informed o f asbes tos hazards when I f i r s t came to work here? Why did we not have re s p ira to rs or dust c o lle c t io n systems on machines? Bendix was made to put caution signs on a l l cartons leaving th is pla n t. That was the f i r s t time we were r e a lly aware o f the dangers o f asbestos approximately 6-8 years ago. Even up u n t il then we were not to ld * o f the r is k we were taking when working in asbestos and were not furnished any p ro tective equipment. This is o f concern to me be cause I have worked in i t fo r almost 18 years. I t is not what we are exposed to now that w orries me so much as what I was exposed to in the past, when Bendix did not t e ll us o f the ris k . W illiam Nix:^ #2, yes, "now", #5, yes. I understand the health ris k s associated w ith breathing asbestos dust now, but what about the years I worked at Bendix before I was informed o f the ris k s ? I wasn't ad vised o f any safety precautions concerning breathing asbestos dust back in 1970. Why weren't we to ld about the hazardous m aterial then? C u rtis Howard: #5, yes, but no questions lis t e d . #2, marked yes but commented ! I do now, but not when I started to work here."
DAVE McCLELLON:
Roy Garner: #5, yes, but no questions lis t e d .
Jimmy Carlton: #2, yes, commented "I do now, but 10 years aqo, I
d id n 't."

HERB HUTSON:
Maynard Herron: #5, yes. When washing asbestos o f f your hands durinq a work day, where does the fib e r s go or does i t remain in the water to the plant o r go to the r iv e r to be inhabited by w i l d l i f e and other people?
WALT SWAFFORD:
Dean Rogers: No s p e c ific questions asked except he commented he doesn't understand the purpose o f the card.
JACK BOYD:
Johnny Moses: #2, yes, #3, checked no, #5 was not answered. Comments noted on h is card and w ritte n by D.L. include the follo w in g : "Had meeting to discuss protective measures to be in it ia t e d with working in an asbestos-related environment. Answered questions and explained what Bendix was tryin g to do to make the working areas safe. Johnny Moses attended the meeting but did not ask any questions." The card was signed and dated by both D.L. Carter and Jack Boyd.

DAVID COE/GERALD GIBBY:
Frank Angel one: #5, yes. Why is i t on some machines, when the dust c o lle c t o r goes o f f they make you run the machine, when the purpose of the dust c o lle c to r is asbestos control? Mike Jacobs: #5, yes. Besides the d e fin it io n -- what are asbestos corns and are we su sce p tib le to them? Is medical treatment required? Lester Brown: #5, yes. I s t i l l feel more can be done about things than is being done! I feel there should be lid s on 'a ll organic dust buggies so dust c o lle c t o r hoses can be hooked up at each machine. C linton Beaty: #5, yes. Why is i t on te le v is io n programs they say breathing asbestos f o r a non-smoker is the same r is k as contracting lung cancer as a smoker? David Cook: #5, yes. T e le v isio n says one thing about asbestos and t h is book says another. Charles Gammill: #5, yes. Wants to see D.L. about his questions. James C. Brown: #5, yes. On d isc briq u ettes, asbestos is airborne when mix hose sucks mix in the machine. On equipment req u irin g res p ira to rs , when the re s p ira to r is taken o f f , yo u 're s t i l l breathing asbestos.

GENERAL COMMENTS FROM THE SAFETY MEETING FORMS:
When you open the doors to take out and brind in the oven racks, debris blows a l l over the f lo o r . Is the company looking fo r a way to stop t h is problem? What does the company do when an operator has a 1.0 fib e r / c c reading or higher asbestos level and the problem can not be located? The old "green" type re sp ira to rs we wore in the mix rooms and other portions o f the plant were confiscated and taken out o f c ir c u la t io n , why? Were they safe? How w i ll the "Gobbler" aid in helping keep dust le v e ls down? Take a ll precautionary measure against

breathing asbestos dust. Q uit smoking. I f you don' t smoke, don' t s ta r t. When the heaters and make-up un its have been.turned o f f ,
they need to be vacuumed before turning back on so they won' t blow dust, making i t airborne fo r us to breathe. How would the company know i f you have mesothelioma in the abdomen when they only x-ray the chest area. A lo t o f questions were asked about asbestos th at I could not answer. -(Dab Mathews). Some employees asked why don' t people who have shower time use i t when the company pays fo r i t . Why are people smoking in the re ce iv in g o f f ic e . Replace broken or worn out vacuum clean ers. Other employees are dropping scrap on the flo o r when they are on t h e ir way to the hopper truck. The importance o f taping a l l torn asbestos bags and cleaning up s p ille d asbestos was discussed. The b e ll on the batch ovens in d is c rings too long before anyone comes to turn i t o f f . The d isc inspection department would appreciate anything which would help. Respirators and p ro te ctiv e equipment should be worn in areas where required. Some employees want to know i f the company has any kind o f cancer insurance. Some o f the new employees have the impression that they do have t h is type o f insurance. Employees are s t i l l complaining about the dust coming from the outside hoppers when bags are dumped in to the hoppers. Employees want to know why the old er employees w eren't informed o f the hazards o f asbestos when they were f i r s t hired. Dust is coming up in to the operator's face when castings are being emptied out.
