ABSTRACT
The D.S.C. Group will propose Divisional use of the 330-line dispersions
for W-SOS, W-559, W-S82, W-785, W-818, W-819 and W-393 as complete replacements
for 42-line counterparts. Objective is to obtain immediate quality and cost
benefits and, in addition, provide the foundation for expanding commercial use
of 330-line dispersions in order to exploit the simplification advantages. This
partial commercialization of seven colorants taken from the basic formulating gamut
of 330-line dispersions will result in direct annual savings of $118,000 based on

DISCUSSION
Earlier estimates (November 27, 1964) of advantages to F. F. from coranercial
use of Universal Colorants formulated by the Dispersion Stabilization Concept indicated annual benefits in excess of $1,000,000. These estimates assumed a basic formulating gamut of 20-25 colorants used in all product systems except where solvents are a limitation. Technical obstacles standing in the way of
commercialization of such new dispersions have been overcome and work moves ahead toward the overall objective of simplification. Even so, the magnitude of the task and the effect that such changes have on the overall conanercial system stretch out the time needed to reach the objectives.
Partial commercialization of seven 330-line dispersions will be proposed in order to obtain some of the potential benefits prior to full commercialization and to provide a foundation for expanding to complete application. The specific immediate quality and cost advantages of 330-line versus 42-line counterparts are the justi fication for this proposal. Benefits such as simplification, fewer batches,
reduced inventories, increased capacity, inproved batch uniformity, etc, though pertinent, are long-range and are not considered as part of the justification for this inmediate use of selected 330-line dispersions.
tables 1, II and 111 show details of estimated potential savings by obsoleting seven 42-line dispersions. Table II summarizes advantages resulting from the greater tintorial strengths of 330-line dispersions when compared with 42-line
counterparts. Table III summarizes advantages resulting from the faster process ing rates obtained when grinding 330-line dispersions.
These calculations are based on previous operating experience and the results obtained from carefully controlled batches of 330-line and 42-line dispersions in which common lots of raw materials were used* Comparisons of tintorial strengths
reflect performance in both the tint test, N/C tdiite base and the 15-line white enamel Since the insnediate use of the colorants will be in alkyd systems, more weight is given to their performance in 15-line (now 195-line). Here, all comparison pilots
were let down, sprayed out and measured at the same time to minimize variability. In cases where the strength advantage of the 330-line is large; e.g., 184 for 330-1505, additional pilots were made tip to experimentally verify the advantages.

Evaluation of up to three months oven stability of 330-line batches shows satisfactory performance. Although the estimated potential savings do not reflect advantages of improved stability, the 330-1785 was found to have better oven stability than 42-785.
