Shamburger DUST SAMPLING PR03ECT FOR THE PLASTICS DEPARTMENT SEPTEMBER 22, 1981 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 29, 1981 The odd numbered quadrants were sampled during this sampling week. There were three quadrants in which the collected dustfall exceeded the recommended limit of 20 tons/mi2/mo - - - Quadrant 7 whose collector is located at the intersection of Caustic and Mayflower Roads, Quadrant 9 whose collector is located at the intersection of Caustic and Power Roads, and Quadrant 15 whose collector is located in the southern corner of the Poly A block at the end of North Canal Road. The excessiveness of Quadrant 15 was not caused by any type of plant emissions. The total amount of dustfall collected in this quadrant can be attributed to insect remains and insect eggs. The outfall collected in Quadrant 7 consisted of mostly road dirt and sand although there was a small amount of CPE granules and HDPE powder. The dirt and sand found in the collector was a result of the ongoing tank construction in the Caustic Block directly across Caustic Road from CPE. The dust collected in Quadrant 9 was caused by excessive emissions primarily from the CPE plant. There were several spills of CPE which might explain why an equivalent of over 45 tons/mi2/mo of CPE was found in this collector. The CPE spills which occurred because of lost filters on both September 24th and 27th were releases directly to the atmosphere; they were not vented to the'ground. These spills, therefore, had a large effect on the amount of CPE resin found this week. Along with the excessive amount of CPE found in Quadrant 9, there were two other quadrants in which CPE granules were noted. t AN OPERATING UNIT OF THE DOW CHEMICAL COMPANY DO 0B4996 CONFIDENT! c Dustfall Report o 2- - October 6, 1981 Polyvinyl chloride was seen In 5 of the 8 collectors picked up this week. There was a PVC spill noted by Security Cate 2-A personnel on September 23. Goodrich personnel were not aware bf this release until they were contacted by Oow. The spill was stopped shortly after the contact but it could have been responsible for the various amounts of PVC found this week as the wind was blowing in a direction towards Poly B from Goodrich. However, none of the amounts of PVC found this week could be considered excessive. There were 7 quadrants in which HDPE powder was found. There was one PE spill recorded at CPE which may have been the source of the powder found In these quadrants.
