looplet of 50/50 by values athanol/weeer solutions contained known enounts of vinyl chloride. In this aeries, levels of approxlaataiy 7 and 400 ppb wart proporad and analysed by gas chroaecogrephy using a flaaa loaiiatiM detector. Data at higher coacentratlone were available fro* previous etudiee (10M dated 5/24/73 to ft. 6. OeCapita froa C. A. ftrunot and ZOH dated ft/31/73 to ft. 0. DoCapita fro* ft. t. Morgan).
1. The lower Unit of datactioa la laaa than 5 ppb.
2. That reaulte on a aaopla containing 50 ppb will fall between 30 and 80 ppb. (fig. 1)
3. frantically all of the vinyl chloride le recovered by teat technique being enployed. (Fig. 2)
4. Mo detectable loaa of vinyl chloride occurred from the aanplea during three soothe etorage.

The laboratory work involves a single operator using the sane gaa chroeatograph and coluen. The coluaai wee reaoved and the chroeatograph used for other purpoaea between seta.
The oe^ljdM that the lower Halt of detection la loaa than 5 parte per bllllooiSKdon fact chat vinyl chloride wea detected on all 42 aanplea, one dflHpdch was known to contain only 4 ppb and four of which were known to contalnonly 5 ppb; and none was detected on the nine saapics that were not spiked.
Oats froa other studies were available froa which ehe reproducibility at approxlaately 2000, 5000, 10000, and 20000 ppb could be calculated. The upper and lower Halts for 95X confidence are plotted in Figure 2. Xatcrpolatla of this data indicates that 95X of the teat results on a aaaple containing 50 ppb vinyl chloride would fall between about 30 and 80 ppb. This, of course, applies only for this operator end on this particular equipaent.

Figure 2 plot# the percent el the knovn vinyl chloride content thee wee recovered (l.e. detected) by the gee ehrosMtograph. i or the solutions containing over 200 ppto vinyl chloride there le little difficulty in recovering owr 901 which le e criterie sunttoned by the FhA (or en eccepteble teat procedure, la feet, 901 recovery wee eve raged for these eeaplee. For the eolutione coateinlng leee then 10 ppb the variability in percent recovery le quite poor, but the average recovery is satisfactory. The high variability la recovery ie probably caused by the weighing errors inherent in adding the vinyl chloride to the ethanol-water solution. The fact that test results on eaaplea containing 90 ppb can be expected to range between 30 and 80 ppb aaans that sultlple saapling and tasting will be required when test results are near a specification lisilt of 30 ppb suxlmuoi.
The first set of seaples were retained and retested after one smith end after three aoathe. Based on the peak area# and the calculated ppb vinyl chloride, it appears no significant change in the vinyl chloride content occurred during shelf storage. Hence, the ease known aanple for lastrunant calibration .an be retained and reused for up to three smiths.
