During that meeting you pro vided us with the information that 11 soil samples had been taken from Snow Creek and a tributary ditch, which, when analyzed by the University of Alabama at Birmingham, indicated PCB levels varying from none detected to 441 ppm. This was followed by some dis cussions concerning the origin of the PCB, the accuracy of the concentration levels, whether such levels indicated any hazard, and other related matters. The Monsanto representatives at the meeting agreed to consider the matter and respond to you concerning it. Without admitting that Monsanto- is the origin of any PCB in the ditch or creek, and without implying that any PCB present presents any hazard, Monsanto is prepared to investigate the presence and concentration of PCB, as a joint effort with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management. The ADEM is the state agency with responsibility in this area, and it is our understanding that it employs a number of scientists well qualified in environmental matters. It is our intention to contact the MEM to develop a sampling program. Samples will be taken and protected in a proper manner, and will be analyzed at a mutually agreed upon facility which is qualified for such work. After all samples taken have been analyzed, we would plan to meet with ADEM personnel to discuss the impact of any PCB levels found.
